COAL MINING DISPUTES.
4 THE AWARDS. (BY TELEGRAPH —rRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedln, September 11. The Arbitration Court awards in the Otago coal mining disputes have been received by tho clerk of awards. In the Green Island dispute the principal points in issue were tho question of weighing coal and the hewing rates. The Court held that the union failed to make out a case for a change in tho present system, but it appeared that during tho negotiations between the parties the employers had offered certain increases, and the Court granted what the employers were willing to concede. Shift wages aro not to be less than 10s. per shift. No chango has been made regarding trucking. Tho now strike clause is inserted. In regard to tho all-and-all dispute the Court states that practically the only matter in dispute was tho provision in conneotion with deficient placts. Tho Court was asked to define a deficient place as one where aver-' age miners could not earn a minimum waga. If any hardship had been suffered in the past the Court considered it was duo to the miners not availing themselves of the provisions made in tho existing agreement for the settlement of such complaints. Whatever clause might bo inserted on the subject would be useless if tho parties would not take the trouble to see that it was put into oporation. Tho Court therefore inserted in this award tho samo deficient placed clauso as appeared in other awards. In the award mado in connection with tho Taratu dispute tho Court inserted the following clauses on matters that had not been settled at tho preliminary conference Shift wages were fixed at 10s., with Is. ektra when working dips. Howing rates were those offered by the company, viz., 2s. 9d., an inoroaso of 3d. per ton. Tho miners, it is stated, failed to satisfy tho Court that the rates offered by tho company would not enable them to earn a living wage.
