LEPROSY.
; , ———♦ •'' " THREE PATIENTS AT QUAIL ISLAND. (Br TELBOBAPH—PBE3S ASSOCIATION.) ' Chrlstohuroh, September 11. . The North Island Maori who is to be detained at Quail Island quarantine station on account of: being afflicted with leprosy was brought from Wellington by the Government b.s. Hinemoa, which arrived at Lyfrtelton about noon to-day. He was under tho care s of Dr. Pomare and Inspector Pnkahika, of the Health Department. The steamer was met on arrival by Dr. C. H. TJpham, port health .offioer, and the patient was taken early in the afternoon to Quail Island, where a eottage. similar -to those occupied by tho other patients has' been erected for his accommodation. There are now three leprosy patients on the island—the last arrival and a European who, was sent thero from Christchurch last year, and a young Maori from tho North Island, who was segregated in November last. He and tho European have both improved in health since going to Quail Island. The young Maori in particular has done so well that it is understood hopes are entertained of his recovory. At 1.30 p.m. to-day the leper patient was transferred from the Hinemoa to a steam launch lying at the side of the steamer farthest from tho wharf and taken to Quail Island, accompanied by the doctors, and other officials.
