, HUTT RIVER,BOARD. : The usual monthly ,meeting of: .the Hutt River Board was heldlast? night, Mr. W.G. Foster in the chair; Mr. ; R. Stevens "reported that in company with-Mr. Bunnv and the foreman lib had .visited- Gear- Island with reference to - the buildings "which tlie ; board could-legally retain from the previous tenants, and he suggested that an allowance as asked by the Riverside' Dairy Company, viz., £40, be granted for improvements which the company had made during its tenancy. This report was adopted and confirmed. . Messrs. B. A. Hansen and Co., timber merchants, of Wellington, wrote asking for'information with regard to. proposed factory lands, and offered to-take eight acres if the board could offer suitable terms. The Bank of New Zealand wrote stating that the rate.of interest on overdraft would bo the same as last term, viz., 5J per cent. Mr. Laing-Mcason (engineer to the. board) wrote with reference to the .subdivision proposed of land at Gear Island. He submitted plans showing.the proposed subdivision into blocks of about' four acres.- This would give thirteen blocks of land available for factory or similar purposes. The proposed reclamation of the Petone . foreshore would in no way affect the- successful -carrying out' of tho board's river canal and basin.: ■ It was the opinion of. the members that smaller blocks of land should bo provided to meet the .wishes of probable-applicants for sections of less area than that suggested. It was decided to ask tho "eugiiieer'tb' make a fresh subdivision, - which-would allow V frontage of not 'fore than 100 ft. to oach section. . It was'resolved that the Major and councillors;.'of Petone'and Hutt should combine, to' wait as a deputation on thi Government to urge the acquirement of the Hutt Park Railway to Gear Island. On the suggestion of the chairman, the mover (Mr. R Stevens) added the Hutt County Council to the proposed deputation. The extension of construction-necessary'to-carry the line on to the Gear Island would bo about 50 chains, and would cost £TOO or jCBTtf; Mr..R. Stevens moved i! ul "le clerk be instructed to write to .Sir! i. iU. Wilford, M.P., asking him to arrange for deputation. This was carried. ■ 'With regard", to Messrs. Hansen and Co.'s application: re section on island, it was resolved to inform the applicants that the hoard •were arranging for railway access to-the land, and would inform them of the result of the application. The foreman reported a satisfactory month's work. Ratepayers of the Lower Hutt "are reminded that a meeting has been convened for 8 o'clock this evening, in the Town Hall, for the. purpose of dealing with the position created by a recant resolution passed by the local council to construct gasworks within tho boiougli. Tho Petone Citizens' Band hold its first animal ball on Wednesday evening. Seventy couples took the floor; and spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening. ? ■ - , Tho Salvation Army held a musical service of, song, entitled the "Wreck of the S.S. Wairarapa "■ Mr. M'Ewan, the Mayor, was in the chair, and gave a short speech with record to the Army.
