HOROWHENUA CHAMPIONSHIPS. ; FIRST NIGHT. The first contests under the; auspices of the Horowhenua Boxing Association were hold in tho Levin Town Hall on Thursday night.Thero was a large attendance of. the public, and the entries totalled 32. The Mayor, Mr. B. R. Gardener, who made a short speech, congratulated the association oil' tho success which had attended its efforts. It was originally intended to have a onenight tourney, but it had. been found that it would bo. impossible to get through the prograpime in one evening. Following were tho results: — BANTAMS. Kutnor (Wellington) beat Barnard (Hawke's Bay).- This was a very quiet exhibition, in which there was hardly any : hitting. .ivorr (Wellington) beat Stewart (Petone) after a very spirited contest. Kerr showed the greater degree of skill. Stewart, who is much younger, displayed promising form. Shields (Manawatu) beat Cootes (Otaki) rather easily. - The latter was not in good form, and Shields could havo knocked him out easily. Watkins , (Manawatu), a bye. LIGHT-WEIGHTS. Chambers (Levin), who is quite a beginner, beat Buxton (Wellington), who was a cleverer fighter, but out of form, and who threw in the towel -in the third round., Dunn (Otaki), who was apparently suffering from "stage-friglit," - had 'to give up to Knocks . (Otaki) before the end .of • tho first round. . Domney's opponent, Crawford, could not draw tho weignt.: . . . WELTER-WEIGHTS. Devitt (Wellington) and Scobie (Tokomaru)' put up the fight of the evening, and after a very hard battle Scobie gave in in the third round. Lloyd (Wellington) and Kronast also fought very hard, but- Lloyd, who was- not in good condition, threw in the towel , in tho .third round. ' MIDDLE-WEIGHTS. Price. v. Cooke (Otaki). ' This was also a rery good fight. Cooke was very quick and i hard hitter, but left his guard too-open, ind a severe blow on the temple from Price knocked him out in tho third round. Moreton, a bye. -. Dr.. Nnpier M'Lean . was the referee, and lis decisions gave satisfaction right through. Messrs. Wm. 'Voice and ,R. Carruthers acted is official seconds. The preparations reflect ;rent credit upon the energetic secretary; Mr. I. G.,,Hankins, and his committee. DUNEDIN TOURNAMENT. ' (r.r TELEatuni—rnEss association.) . Dunedin, September 10. . The - Otago Boxing Association concluded,, ts tournament to-night before a packed louse. In the final- of the bantam competi;ion, Lecltie (Dunedin) defeated Tumbull [Dunedin), and in the contest for second jrizo the latter was beaten by Wild (Diiri:din). In-tho six-round bouts, Cross (Christ:hurch) won from Ruston (Dunedin) on a 'oul in fourth round, tho latter being Jien in tlio lead on points; Laing (Dunidin) defeated Owens (Dunedin), wlulo GunIry (Christchurch) .secured the .verdict from 3reaver in the fifth round, after a very exiting . contost. : Parker (Christchurch).' put ip a very attractive showing against Traill, Dunedin), and secured the decision.
