.. — -« A CRITICISM AND REPLY. THE NEW LAMPS. ;; At the meeting of the City Council last evening; the' Power Stations and Tramways . Committee recommended that the following scale of discounts on power' supply be ■ adopted, viz.'-■•■■■! 1 to 500 units ... ... ... Id. 501 to 1000 units ... ..; ... l}d. 1001 to 1500 units ... ... lid. ■ 1501 to 2000 units ... ... ... ljd. .2001 to 2500 units ... ... ' ... 2d. 2501 to 3000 units ... ... . ... ( 2jd. , 3001 and over units ... ... ... 2Jd. Councillor Fisher , asked what was being done to push the salo 'of - the 'new -Osram lamps. Ho thought that'-if was more widely known what; economy''could be effected by these lamps, the demand for them would be greatly increased.' • . Councillor Shirtcliffe said that the matter had been already' published. Councillor Fisher thought that not enough had been done to "push" the lamps.' " . '..Councillor Carmichael said :that it was a curious commentary on the power station ■if the council , was to supply electric' power at 1.75 d. per unit, direct current, when "the oost of production -was 2.88 d. per unit, . altornal. w .g.'. at the. .. station. T t showed that the plant was an expensive one to work. There were private'firms in the city who had installed, their own plants, andwero, . manufacturing '.electric. 1 power ; at,a 1 cost, of .75d. per unit. ' . Referring, to the new Osram ligts, he said that they.; represented ~a sav-v . ing of 50 per: cent. ; . ' Councillor Luke, from his own experience, jndorsed' this! last estimate. Ho - declared that the council had made-a' very, fino ba'r- . 'when it purchased the electric lighting •jlant. - The council had not yet had, time io instal.cortain up-to-dato machinery, which., 'S would lessen tho cost of production. It was proposed'' to spend £24,000. on this department, and' that amount would be obtained ,out of two years'earnings, without going to . : the'citizens for one penny.' ' . The Mayor stated that'it .was. not fair-to compare figures. for tho direct and alternating currents. A .certain ariiount of.; power, was lost in distribution. .The. cost of generating was being, gradually reduced. He did not always take Councillor Carmichael.' seriously on this subject. .It was unfortunate, for-him (Councillor. Carmichael) that tho experiment had proved absolutely'satisfactory, but ho must console himself with the thought . , , that it was a good thing for the, public. Ho ' thought they could congratulate themselves : on having acquired this plant on absolutely cheap terms, and if tho. councillors, were, ' tired of their possession they, could, turn ; it over at an advanco of at least 100 per 1 cent.. ' , v \, ■■, ■ . ■ ! ■ With regard to the new lamps, the Mayor • stated, that the council was showing its. own 1 confidence in them by ordering a thousand, J and he had ho'doubt that when the public ' , /saw ■them in ..the streets 'they, would make ' . inquiries and adopt the new'lamps for-them? \ ■ . selves. : .. ; ■■ ■ . ...
