" At Homo ".at ICarorl. A lovely garden in a sheltered position, and rooilis filled with beautiful (lowers, mado the setting for a delightful "At Home" given yesterday afternoon by Mrs. Bristow at Kftrori. ■ A great many guosts were there, most of whom had gone cut from town. Tea was served in two rooms —in the diningroom, where the decorations were of purple and white anemones,'primroses, and viblets, with yellow-shaded lamps,' and in another room adorned with red anemones, primroses, and snowflakes. All these flowers were grown in Mrs. Bristow's own garden, and'after tea tho guests wandered" out to ■ admire tho flowers that were all-agrowing. There were musicians stationed in the hall to supply the accompaniment to the flow of conversation, and a fortune-teller to advise the guests. Mrs; Bristow received in a very pretty frock' of pale green voile trimmed with silk, and her three-daughters were in white. .Among those'present were:—Mrs. and Miss Knox, Mrs. Tringham, Mrs. Tewsley, Mrs. Salmond, 'Mrs. ..and Miss Butts, Mrs. Samuel, Mrs. Macarthy, Mrs. Moss, the Misses Turner, Mrs;Stubbs, Mrs. and Miss Burnett, Dr. Platts-Mills, Miss Nicholson, Mrs. Young, Mrs. :Holmwood, Mrs. Ballance, Sirs. The opening of the Art Exhibition on Thursday evening was a great success. Their Excellencies the Governor and Lady Plunket were welcomed by Mr. Cohen, the .president of the society, and a/short speech of welcome was also made by Mr. Te Awe Awe, in native costume, on behalf of the Maoris. The collection of .pictures is hung in tho central hall, while the side hall is devoted to the collections of old lace and jewellery,: those lent by Mrs. L. Abraham, Mrs. Lissama'n, Mrs. Archibald, and Sirs. Forster Pratt being particularly interesting.' A short programmo. of music was given; aiid tea was served-in the front hall: arranged most effectively as a tea-garden. A large number of peoplo responded to the invitation of the committee, *nd many pretty frocks wero worn.. Lady Plunket was ' wearing white satin, with long pale blue coat handsomely triiiimed with lace; Mrs. Wata-field was in whito silk, and Mrs.. Cohen, wifo of. the president, wore, black 'with handsomo silver scarf. , Miss Beswick wore black crepe de chine with pretty floral coronet, and others present were Mrs. O'Brien, Mrs.' Louisson, Miss Wilson, Mrs. Bendale,' Miss Keeling, Dr. Stowo, Dr.. O'Brien, Messrs. . Watson, Barnicoat, Hockley, Louisson, .and Bendale. Mr..and Mrs. C. E. Waldegrave and Miss' Waldegravo-returned to Palmerston'on Tuesday'after a delightful trip to England. They iiavo brought out a beautiful Humber motor car,' one of the largest in the'district. ' Colonel' and Mrs.' Gorton gave a most enjoyable dance on Thursday evening at their residence " Rangiatea," Bulls. Tho hall and diningroom were used for dancing, and supper was laid in the billiardroom, which was' beautifully decorated' with masses of lilies;' ' The - supper-table ' was ornamented with a pretty design in violets; including tho'name of the debutante, Miss Olga Levett, in whose honour tho dance was givenj and the dftto. Mr.: Denis Gorton, who has lately returned from a long stay in the Argentine, was among tho.dancers, and • the guests included, several Palmerston peoplo, who motored l over, for; the. evening. . The Hon. Kathleen Plunket was accompanied by Cap-tain-Hardy and Captain Lyon. Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Monro took their daughter, Miss Mary Monro,-.who also, madocher 'dobut. Shu wore' soft ,whit&'satin' with, s pearl trimmings: Miss Olga dress was white net over, satin,MissroM.vAAbfaliami wire- I 'deep •■rose' pink, Miss Dolly Wilson a pretty dress of green silk muslin, with tucked skirt and empire bodice trimmed with net.; Miss Russell, handsome lace dress over gold tissue; Miss Barnicoat, blue-anti silver. Mrs. Waterfield Has her cousin, Miss Wood (Christchurch), staying with her; - Judge and Mrs. Chapman , are ,at ' the Grand.Hotel for the sitting of tho Supremo Court, and were both at the opening of tho Art Exhibition. Mr. and Mrs. Alan Saxby (Napier) aro spending' a. short holiday in Palmerston, and are'also at. the Grand Hotel. Entertilnlng the Htckey Cirls. Theretras porhaps a little disappointment felt when it was . known that, instead of arranging for a dance to bo given to the visitV.ig ladies'' hockey teams, it; had been decided .to entertain, them at a conversazione. It sounded just a little bit dull, but there are all sorts of conversaziones, and therecertainly nothing dull about the social held in the : Concert. Hall last night. An excellent programme had been provided, chiefly by individual members of the Wellington Savage Clubhand every item of this was thoroughly appreciated. Then followed supper in the long corridor, wliero there was such a crowd of youths and-maidens that it was not easy to see how any of them managed to get anything to eat, and heroic souls pressed through the throng bearing food to the hungry. After this thero was a dance.in tho Concert Hall, a part of the entertainment that was perhaps more enjoyed than any other. The gills wero nearly all in white frocks, with coloured ribbons, and they looked as delightfully fresh and alert as though they had. not touched a hockey stick all the week. But the hockey was not forgotten through the whole evening. Part of tho evening's business was the presentation of the champion cups, tho senior championship cup presented by Mr. C. Izard. M.P., and the junior cup presented by Messrs. ■E. W. Mills and Co. In presenting the senior cup t-o Miss Heath, captain of the Hawko's Bay team, Dr. Izard said that though the tournament was not concluded it was certain that Hawke's Bay had won the championship.'The junior cup was'won by the Wellington A, team, and the cup was presented to Miss Rita Johnson (captain) on their behalf. ' A third cup for the local championship was presented to Miss Macintosh for the Victoria College team, and Dr. Izard called upon Miss Macintosh to make a speech, which she did very nicely and clearly,, speaking of-the unselfish play of the girls, who had not wanted to "win for their individual but for the honour of the college. The ■ Ferry • Company had offered br.ooches.for the winning team, and Dr. Izard announced that these-would bo received by the'Hawko's Bay. team. Mr. Clias. Izard and Mr.-Hislop both addressed the gathering.' Dr. A. W. Izard presided, and the programme was as follows:—Songs were given by Miss Isaacs, with violin obligato by Miss Newman, and by Mr. Arthur Ballance, Miss Hugo, and Mr. E. J. Hill, Mr. Newtonf and Mr. D. Kenny; and the famous string quartette playc-d, and tho amusing comedietta, "A Pair of Lunatics," was admirably given by Miss Jamieson and Mr. Mills. It is understood that on the retirement of Dr. Dawson, of Tenui, Dr. Elizabeth Gunn will tako his practice. Yesterday ovening Miss Estello Beere gave a danco for a largo numbor of her pupils, including all those of middlo size (which does not mean quite the same as middle-age). They ranged in ages from about soven to fourteen, and they seemed to enjoy themselves exceedingly. Thero were dances for all, and intervals when some.of the children did fancy dances and tho others sat round and admired their skill. At her concert last night Miss Ireno Ainsloy wore an exquisite lace frock of cream rose point over silk, a Worth frock which was a presont from Madame Mclba to her young protege. Mrs. Louisson has gone to Christchurch, and Miss Louisson is staying with Mrs. Walter Nathan. Miss Marchunt, of Dunedin, who returned this week from her visit to Sydney, is leaving for the South to-day. Mother Mary Joseph Aubert gratefully acknowledges the receipt of £13, tho result of a bazaar organisjd by two little girls in Makuri, and says a bed will bo placed in tho home called "The Makuri Bed."
Various peoplo aro having house parties at Trentham this week, while the goif tournament is on. Mrs. C. Bidwill, Mrs. H. Johnston, and Miss Duncan are staying with Mrs. Dalziel; Mrs. Tweed, Airs. W. Bidwill, Mrs. Buchanan, and Miss Lucy Brandon aro the guests •of Mrs. Biss; 'and Miss Russell and Miss Simpson aro staying with Mrs. Jiwen. Mr. H. D. Bell is building a cottage at Silverstream. An enjoyable pupils' danco was held on Monday night in Mrs. H. D. Mason's privato |iall, Ghuznee Street. During the evening a recitation was given by Miss G. Man-nest-ed, and Mr. F. Green sang two songs. This was one of a series of pupils' dances held by Mrs. Mason during tno winter. Mrs. and Miss Middleton, of "Blink Bonnie," Auckland (late of County, Kerry, Ireland), were passengers by the Ta'l&ipuna yesterday. They intend to stay for a few weeks in Wellington. Miss Mary Maxwell, of Virginia, JJ.S.A., who has been a visitor to Wellington, has left on a" tour of . the Hot Lakes. Tho sale of work at the Terrace Congregational ' Church, organised by'~the Young Women's Club, which was opened on Wednesday afternoon, was continued yesterday 'evening with most satisfactory results. During the evening songs and recitations were given by friends, under tho direction of Miss Evans.'
