Additional particulars are published in the Sydney'papers concerning the collision of the two colliers, Colac ,and Pareora, which .occurred on Saturday week inside Sydney Heads. The Pareora, recently purchased by the Southern Coal Owners' Agency from the Blackball Coal Company of New Zealand, was outward bound, and the Adelaide Company's cargo steamer Colac was coming up the harbour.' The "Sydney Morning Herald" savs:— "precisely how the accident happened will not be known until the whole matter has been investigated by.a Court of Marine Inquiry.' The night was clear,'and the sea smooth, although a slight haze hung over the South Reef. The vessels had been standing on their right course, showing red to red, and expected to - pass one another with plenty of room to spare. ■ "Suddenly, however, "the vessels approached stem to stom, and a collision appeared inevitable. Two blasts were sounded by one of the steamers, and replied to by the other. Then one whistle was sounded, followed almost immediately by a terrific crash. Hasty examinations were made both on board tho Colac and the Pareora, and both proceeded at full speed up the harbour in the hope that a refuge would be reached in time. "There was a great -gaping rent down the stom of the Colac from, the deck line to below tho waterline, and Captain, Jolifle directed, a course well inside Rose Bay in case he should find it nccessary to beach his. vessel. The Colac, however, remained afloat, and succeeded in reaching the 1 Colonial 'Sugrir Refining Company's wharf at Pyrmont. .In the 'meantiriie tho collier Pareora was under full steam, making a course for Mort's Dock. Her stem had been torn away by. the force of tho impact, and she presented a sorry spectacle.' • "One of the firomen of the. Colac, named Walker, had a'narrow escape. Immediately before the collision .he was lying in the forecastle, and hearing'a.-warning'snout from tho lookout man. hb leaped'out of liis" bunk just as the buckled plates' wero" coiling' about him." ; Shortly beforo midnight on Tuesday tho topsail schooner Amelia Sims, from Hokianga, arrived in the stream.-. % • It is expected that'the! Shaw-Savill steamer Cevic will ■ leave \ Wellington to-day or to.morrow for Southern ports. ■ Thence the. vessel proceeds to Australia for lopding' purposes! Last ' night the Union ■ Company's ferry steamer Mararoa resumed running-in the Lytt?ltori- Wellington service: ' Captain.'Manning takes command, and has associated with him' Mr; Ritchie'(late of the Waipori) as chief officer, Mr. Thomas (lato'-of tho Pukaki) second officer, and Mr. Gordon remains third. On arrival at Ly't'telton this morhing tho turbine steamer Maori lays up for overhauland will be floated into Lyttclton dock-to-day. The Pateena,,which takes up tho Maori's running, will leave Lyttclton to-night for Wellington. When.tho Maori resumes running, in about a week s time, tho Pateena withdraws and will, go on tho slip at Wellington, after which she relieves the Penguin in the Picton-Nclson-Wellington service.
