"WIRELESS."
A POULSEN TRANS-PACIFIC SCHEME. NEGOTIATIONS ON FOOT. A-POSSIBLE START NEXT YEAR. (si teleohath —pkess association—cortitianx.) (Rec. September 8,, 0.55 a.m.) Sydney, September 7; Reforring to the New York cablegram announcing that a plan is taking shape to link important islands in tho Pacific by wireless telegraphy, the Australian representative of tho Amalgamated Poulsen Radio Company of London states that negotiations aro proceeding with the Governments of the various islands interested, that the Commonwealth and the Now Zealand Governments aro favourably disposed, and that the various shipping companies have agreed to co-
operate. Should the company receive sufficient support, a start to instal tho scheme will be made in the new year. It will take twelve months to complete. POULSEN'S CLAIMS. The New York cablegram' referred to waspublished yesterday, along with particulars of the 1905 scheme (Shoemaker's) for a Pacific wireless connection between the United States and Australasia. The Danish inventor, M. Yaldemar Poulsen, has made wonderful progress in the science of telegraphing and telephoning without wires, "lit' is my fixed intention," he said soma months ago, "ultimately to establish a wireless tolephono between England and Denmark (Esbjerg). I do not intend to hurry, however, although my system of wireless telephony has already proved fully successful over long- distances. That is in consequence of our new and improved microphones (the instrument which magnifies tiny sounds) and other apparatus. "But the public will not be , able to telephone or telegraph by my wireless inventions until every detail has been completed and stations have been established all over tho world.; Whilo every day brings further progress and experience, we do not wish to begin wireless telegraphing and telephoning between Denmark and England or America until we are quite able to compete with the present cables. ... "Jly system of wireless telegraphy, by using 'undamped' waves, can now forward," M. Poulsen claimed, "at least seven times as many words as M. Marconi's system of sparks, ana my system otherwise is reliable and safe."
