A shocking disaster occurred in. the Mount Morgan Mine on Saturday evening, resulting* l in the death of seven men, named Leishman, Shepherd, Guthrie, Jory, Sillyard, Gerrke, and' Ryan. They wore employed at the 850 ft. level. Suddenly, without warning, an immense mass of earth and rock, estimated to weigh 3000 tons, broke away, filling the level and burying the seven men. Though it was recognised that the position was practically hopeless, the work of the mine was stopped'and rescue operations were started, and were continued throughout Saturday night and to-day. The work was/attended with great danger- owing to , further debris falling. The last body was recovered to-night. All were terribly mutilated. A great crowd surrounded the mine,..and pitiful scenes took place. Five of those killed were married. Just prior to the collapse a man mot with an accident, and a companion accompanied him out of the fatal level. Guthrie then descended; and took the injured man's place, where he subsequently met his death. Meanwhile the man who had escorted his injured companion'to .the surface was returning to work, and with two others had a narrow escape. They were standing just outside the disturbed area when it collapsed.
