An offer on behalf of a syndicate of English and German capitalists has been mado to the Stato Government to take over tho Northern Territory on the same terms as offered by the Commonwealth. The Federal and tho South Australian Govern.ments last year arrived at an agreement under which the Commonwealth was to take ovor the Northern Territory. Tho agreement had to be ratified by both Parliaments, and has already been passed by tho South .Australian Parhamont. It is expected that there will bo considerable opposition in the Federal Parliament. SIGNALS FROM AN ISLAND. Sydney, September 1. Tho Marama, which sailed yesterday, was instructed to call at the Phoenix Group to inquire as to the rocent signals made to the steamer Willcsdon. Previous advices stated • that tho steamer Willesden reported that after she had passed Sydney Island, one of the Phoenix Group, on August 12, signals were made from the shore. Had they beou made, earlier, the vessel would have inquired, but, being short of coal, she could not return. It was suggested at Sydney that the signals may'have had some connection with tho missing steamer Aeon, but Messrs. Lever Brothers, who lease the island, stated that their employees were in tho habit of signalling vessels in order to obtain newspapers. THE HAWEA. Sydney, September 1. The Hawea will land a portion of hor cargo, and will then go into dock and receivo a new tail shaft. THE AEON. Sydney, September I.
