Boxing is now one of the chief pastimes here, and in quiet haunts may be seen several of our young athletes indulging in the noblo art of self-defence. We possoss one or two skilled boxers who will compete at the tournament to bo held at Levin shortly. Mr, A. E. Anderson, managing director tor Messrs. Byron Brown, Limited, is now an inmate of the sanatorium. The local Salvation Army corps, assisted by brethren from Lovin and elsewhere, held a convivial'evening at the barracks on Monday' night, when a good musical programme was submitted. . Work on the new racecourse is being pushed on, and in a few days the ground will' bo under the plough, while other improvements will also be effected. ■ Several local golf players will compete at the Palmerston tournament. Cookery classes, under Miss Alexander, started at the local school on Monday afternoon. Some 700 acres of bush have been felled in the Otaki Gorge this season ; and it is estimated a deal more timber will bo felled before various contracts expire,
