ELDERLY MAN FOUND DEAD. (BIT TELEGEAPH—PEESS ASSOCIATION.) Cfsborne, September 1. An elderly man named James Cookery, who had been living with the Maoris at To Arai, waß found dead in a wharo yesterday. He had been ailing lately. An inquest will be held this afternoon. BENZINE EXPLOSION. Dunedin, September 1. An explosion of . benzine occurred at 2 o'clock this morning in the storeroom of tho Moana. There were threo men in the room at the time, and they dashed out covered with flame. They were the ship's storekeeper and two young engineers working on the . ship. The former and ono of tho latter were removed to the Dunedin Hospital. They were burned about the hands and face, but it is believed not dangerously. The third man was burned about the legs, but " his injuries are not severe. SUDDEN DEATH. • Auckland, September 1. William Porter, a single man, aged 25 years, died suddenly between 7.30 last night and 3.30 this' morning on the fishing boat Maroa. Tho deceased' Was out on a week's fishing cruise with the two Sanford brothers. Ho soomed in the best of spirits laSfc night, / and rotired at 7.30. When they went to wake him at 3.30 he was dead. An inquest will bo held. SAD DEATH OF A CHILD. Ashburtcn, August 31. While playing in a washhouso at home at Eift'cton, on Saturday, tho three-year-old son of Mr. George Husband clambered oil to tho top of a copper, and fell in; being immersed in boiling water up to his thighs. Ha was pulled out by a teli-year-old. brother, and taken to the Ashbul-ton Hospital,- where ha died yesterday.

INVALID BURNED TO DEATH. invercarglll, August 31. A four-roomed house at Makarewa, owned by Mr. Joseph Fraser, was destroyed by fire. Mr. Fraser, aged 66, an invalid, was burnt to death. His wife and son were engaged milking in a shed one'hundred yards away, and tho. place was in flames when they reachfcd tho scene. At tho inquest the jury found that death was duo to suffocation and burning, 110 blamo being attachable to anyopo. John Russell was commended for his prompt ef* fort 9 at / rescue.
