BRITAIN AND JAPAN.
JUBILEE OF THE FIRST TREATY. (by telegraph—peess association—COPl"KlGHT.) London, August 26. 'Ib-day is the jubilee of the first treaty between Great Britain and Japan. "The Times" makes special friendly", comments.-' ,7 FIFTY YEARS AGO. A commercial alliance between the United States and Japan was concluded .as. early. as March 31, 1854,, and similar alliances are recorded with Britain (October 14, 1854) andRussia (January 26,1855). The treaty referred to in the cablegram is that which opened Japan to British commerce, and which was concluded on August 26,1858. It is known as the Treaty of Jedo (Jedo being the old ' name of Tokio), and was concluded by Lord Elgin, who was well received at the Japanese capital.. As: a present for the Emperor of Japan,. 'Lord' Elgin brought with him a steamer, which no doubt produced a profound impression on, the Japenese mind, and may possibly have contributed to the wavo of maritime activity' that culminated at Tsushima. Nagasaki and Hakodadi had boen opened to European commerce in 1856.
