1 A meeting of the Olium North Settled Association was held at "MatierC ou Saturday last, Mr. C. Box in the^'chair. The secro- ; tary, Mr. L. Bichenb, reported .that a liuniber of roads aiid bridges that required attention 'had been brought, before the notice of tho Minister. It was resolved that a i meeting bo held at Nihoniho/'/to elcct two members to represent that 'district on tho executive committee. It was also resolved that tho committee bo instructed to see that all grants made by the roads department tor roads and bridges in tho .district, are fully and properly expended, and that, ""hen possible it is the wish of the association tLat all work bo dono by coritract in prefeienca to day labour. With regard to the Stratforcl-Kawakaws (Ongarue) railway, it was also decided that other members of Parliament bo written to, including the Wellington members, showing tho injustice to the settlers here if tho proposed deviation in tho line woro made, also stating that the Crown lands in this district had been sold on the understanding that tho railway would pass .through Matiero and junction' at Ongarue, and that consequently a change would be a breach ol faith 'with the settlers. The proposed deviation, it was also pointed out, would increase iho lengthy of the line by about 20 miles. It ivas. stated that . the Auckland Railway Leaguo which 'had hitherto supported tho starting at Ongaruo rrero now giving their support to the deviation', oil the grounds that it would bring the junction nearer Auckland.
