» , MONTHLY.MEETING. Tho monthly meeting of >tho Wellington Education Board was held yesterday, there being present:—Messrs. R. Leo (chairman), J. Kobbell, A. W. >Hogg, M.P., J. G. W. Aitkon, M.P., Captain T. W. M'Donald, H. Field, M.P., W. C. Buchanan, and A. H. Vile, ' THE BOARD'S FINANCES. The monthly statement of finances showed that tho following accounts were in credit: —General account, £1195 2s. 5d.; secondary account, £157 2s. Id.; technical account, £*79 55.; manual and technical account, £7-11 15s. 4d.; teachers' salaries, £397 14s. 7d.; deposit account, £38 ss. In debit: —Buildings account, £2458 7s. sd. The total credit balance on the various accounts amounted to £3109 ss. 2d., an excess 'of_£Gso 17s. 9d. over the debit balance of £2458 7s. sd. This is a substantial improvement on tho previous month's statement of finances, which showed a debit balance of £546 2s. 7d. The contract liabilities (including sites) were set down at £4279 lis. Gd. The paysheet, amounting to £8667' os. id:,-Was passed for payment. Referring to tho amount at credit, £650 17s. 9d., Mr. Lee remarked that they would have very little difficulty in disposing of the amount, as there were some heavy calls pending. GOVERNMENT GRANTS. . The following grants were received from the Government: —Petone —new school, in brick, £3790 18s.; Upper Hutt—additional grant, £393; Waikanae—half cost site and building, £438; l'erraco School Laboratory— ..half cost of laboratory fittings to be granted as in the case of Newtown School. It was decided, on the motion of Mr. J. Kchbell, to mako application to tho Government for the provision of a teacher's residence at Waikanao. I CORRESPONDENCE.
Correspondence from Messrs. T. H. Tinkham and W. M. Laing, with. reference to the establishment of aided schools, was referred to the chairman and inspectors, -with power to act. A similar application from Silverstream'(Upper'Hutt 'district) was referred to the inspectors for a report. Normandale: It was resolved to support an. application for ail aided school for Norman-! dale, which had been previously considered,! and a request for the, establishment of the. school is to be forwarded to the Department; Brooklyn: The Brooklyn School, Committee approached the board with a request that it join with them in personal representation to tho Minister for Education regarding increased accommodation for tho school. Captain M'Donald did not approve of tho idea of .joining-issuo with the .committee on such a matter. Sir. Hogg: Too much like putting tho cart before-the horse. Mr. Vile moved that ; the board itself mnko application for tho increased accommodation required. In tho event of' a refusal, they could then consider future action. This was agreed to. Sito at Potone: .Notification was, received that the western school site at Petono had •been'formally vested in tho board.- - Plans for the new school building to bo orected thereon were submitted, and, on the motion of Captain T. W. M'Donald, were duly approved. Upper Hutt School (re-erection): A memorandum was received from the building inspector.at Upper Hutt declining to issue tho necessary permit for the re-erection of the Upper Hutt School on the new sito, on the. ground that certain portions of tho timber of tho old building wero riot fit to bo used again. On tho, motion of Captain M'Donald, 'the matter was left in tho hands of tho Works Committee. Ma«t«rton: An application for the construction of an assembly hall at tho Masterton School, was referred to tho Works Committed .for ajroport. " S 'Vogeltown: Further correspondence' referring., to. tho establishment 'of., a school at Vbgeltoim.-i'ivas considered., A % previous application had becil refused on tho ground that it would prejudice the' success of tho board's endeavours to secure additional accommodation at Brooklyn.. -Those interested in the educational necessities of Vogoltown replied urging consideration of their claims without ■ mfereneo to Brooklyn, v The board decided to refer tho whole question to tho Works Committeo and tho inspectors for a report at a subsequent meeting. '
FINANCE AND WORKS COMMITTEE. The following recommendations of the. Finance and Works Committee wero adopted:— • Muhunoa. —That application bo to Department for residence. That,the following be deferred:—Newtown, m'odern desks to replace old ones; Levin, picket fence, ton chains. Tenders accepted:—ll. Rigg, additions to Mastcrton ' School, £310; Williams and Wright, latrjnes at Levin, £28; desks—that an addition of Is. 9d. be allowed to contract price for improvement in desk., Miscellaneous: —(a) Section 160, Block X, Mangaone—That, in consideration of Mr. Turner's providing a school room, tho fencing conditions, be modified as requested by the School Cbmrriittco; (b) Hawtrey Estate —That steps taken to secure additional unused section bo approved; (c) That gas heater be fitted in old board room, arid that additional table bo purchased; (d) That unused library books be sold by auction; (e) Training College—That in consideration of the staff providing piano the old one lent to the' College be sold, and the funds placed at the disposal of the College.
REPORT RE TRUANT SCHOOL. . The committee set up to report upon tho question of establishing a truant school in tho city reported that even in tho. large centres of Australia lio truant school has been established; -and it has'' been informed by direct inquiry from the headmasters of the city and suburban schools that tho numbor of habitual truants does not exceedjfrom 7 to 12, and that of these several aro improving. The •. committee is, therefore, of opinion that the circumstances do not warrant 'tho establishment of a truant school. ADVERTISING.' /'The committee appointed to. deal with tho basis of advertising to bo adopted by the board recommended:—(l) Vacancy advertisements —That vacancy advertisements be inserted twice in oach of tho three city papers; and (2) casual advertisements—That, as at present, tenders and similar advertisements be advertised in the district where the work is to bo done, and that statutory advertisements be inserted the number of times required by law. After considerable discussion, _in which it was pointed out that -teachers in tho country districts should be given an opportunity of knowing when suitable vacancies were offering, it was decided that- vacancy advertisements should' be inserted once in tho country nowspapors. TRAINING COLLEGE. Tho Training College Committee of Advice recommended that applications be made to the Education Department for grants in respect of the following(a) Additional laboratory for nature study and physiology; (b) a room for the extension of the work of the infant department; and (c) an annual grant of £10. for tho up-kcep of tho library. •
