Auckland, August 2G. , The Government steamer Tutanekai is having ' a fo'w alterations made in her cable gear preparatory to.carrying out cable-laying operations ' between Great Barrier Island and, tho mainland. The-cable will arrive from-.London atAuckland towards the end of next month by the steamer Kia Ora. It is a single.core cable, weighing six tons' to tho knot, "and about fifteen ' knots will be required for tho work. The Tutanekai will probably come' to Auckland to tranship the cable at that port to save time. ' Tho cable will run from Tryphena, on the south-western end of the Great Barrier, to Port Charles, which is about forty miles from the Thames. Tho cable will- connect by land lines, via Coromandel, to Thames. Telegraphic ' communication, both for us by shipping and the settlers on the island, has been reconi- ' mended for some time.
