PETONE BOROUCH COUNCIL. Tho fortnightly meeting of tho Pctono Borough Council was hold last' evening, when thoro woro present his Worship, tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Enan) and Councillors Cole, Castjo, Short, Young, Southgato, Colquiioun, Smith, and Dr. Harding. . On tlio Mayor's motion-it was rosolvod tlint tho rates for tho year 190S-9 bo tho same as for last year. Tho Mayor reported that tho money for tho Rocrcation Ground purohases and tlio improvement loan was cow in tho bank. They had scoured tlio lnoney at •!} por cent. Tho amount of £350 which tlio Council had passed for payment to Petono Trotting Club to purchase .buildings erected by them on llccreation Ground could now bo paid. It was decided that this shculd bo dono.

■ The Mayor and Engineer were appointed at last meeting to" inspect Mr. Price s land on tho sido of tho Korokoro-hill for a quarry, and roported that Mr.' Price had offered to allow tlio Council to take metal from tho qliarry for 14 years freo of charge, provided tho Council mado a road up to tlio quarry. Councillors wanted to know how much tho road would cost. Tho Engineer was instructed to ( report to tho next meeting. Tho Council niado an offer to supply gas to tho Hutt Borough Council for tho sum of 4s. 3d. per thousand cubic foot for tho first threo years, and 4s. for tho next four years of a seven-year term. Correspondence was received from tlio Lowor Hutt Borough Council asking the number of football grounds on tho Petono Recreation Ground, and what rent was received ; also what percentage. on tho gato money whon a chargo for admission was made. It was dccidod that tho information bo supplied. . Mr. D, G. Eraser, Secretary of tlio New Zealand Rugby Football Club, wrote acknowledging tho terms offered by tho Council for tho Recreation Ground, viz., £10 on a ' sixponny gato, and as the. proccods would bo devoted to the organising of the Northern Union game, tho writer asked to bo allowed to chargo ono shilling. Councillor Southgate moved that they bo allowed ; to chargo ono-shilling,'but called attention to the fact that no information was supplied when making. application for' tho permit, Councillor Colo seconded tho motion -and said that, as thoy would have considerable, expense and mpnoy to be devoted as above, thoy should bo'allowed to chargo tho amount..Tlio motion wan carried.

Tho Wellington Rugby Football Union also, wrote, drawing tho Council's attention to the fact that no g'atekoopors had been appointed for the last two Saturdays, and stating that last Saturday some six hundred wept .to the ground expecting to'bo called on to pay. Tho Town Clerk reported that many times tho Rugby. Union postponed matches, but nover gavo tho Counoil notice, and the Council had to pay their moiii who acted as gatekeepers, and got nothing for it. ■Messrs. Tho Mayor stated that the above had boon attended to, and he also'moved that the letter be received, This was oarried. .A letter was rcocivod from tho Lower Hutt Borough Council onclosing an account from Mr. G. Laing Meason, civil engineer, for costs, ££33 14s. 6t1., in' connection with tho plan of the, proposed tramway district. Tho Town Clerk reported that Potono had not yet received a oopy of tho plan prepared. The Mayor moved that half of the above account bo paid and an application bo made for a copy of plan. Councillor Young seconded, and tho motion was carried.

Brodie, Wellington, and Wm. Inglis, Petono. .The' Mayor moved, and ■it 'was carried, that" tho 'amount passed for buildings, ctc., oil tho ground bo paid. : The Hutt 'ltiver Board has forwarded a plan'of the proposed oxtension of Hutt Park Railway to Gear Island-, and asked tho Conn; oil's co-operatioii to further tho proposal. Tho Mayor • movetj, and Councillor Colo seconded, that Council do all in its powor to assist and also to get .the' Government to take over the Hutt Park Railway. Tho motion was carricd.

PETONE MAGISTRATE'S COURT. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held yesterday at Potpno before Dr, A: M'Arthur, S.M., and Messrs. Inglis and Mothes, J.P.Y Tho following civil cases were dealt with; —Commissioner of Taxes v. Goorgo Packwood, representing Packwood and Brittain, for £1 2s. Ild.,'judgmentfor plaintiffby default with costs os. Archibald _ Eeir v. Frank Burton, claim £1 19s. Bd., judgment for plaintiff, with costs ss. M. A. Tattle v. G. Southio, for £6 12s. Cd., judgment for plaintiff by default, costs ss. I. Young'v. J. J. Stack, judgment for plaintiff by default, £4 25., with'ss. costs. Martha Ciuttorbuck v. Charles Ward, judgment _ for plaintiff, claim, £1, costs ss. F. G. lleid v. Charles Ellison, judgment for plaintiff by dofault, £3 75., costs ss. Richard Wylie v. George Brocklehurst, adjourned to Wellington August 81.' Herbert Millington v. Hugh Mallany, adjourned sine die with 48 hours' notice. M, A. Tattle v. Edward Rouso, Jun., no appearance of judgment debtor, ordered to pay £2 6s. before September in default threo days' imprisonment. ' The adjournod case of Bailoy, Arous and Austin, against Mrs. Edmonds, for timber supplied, was also heard. Tho amount of tho claim was £29. Judgment was given for defendant!

Tho next caso was Cotton v. Gaynor, a claim of £3, Mr, Smith representing plaintiff and Mr. Wilson defendant. Plaintiff said tho caso was ovor a suit supplied to M'Auliffo while, he was working for Gaynor, and that defandant said he would be- responsible. Defendant said that ho only told Mr. Cotton that. M'Auliffe was all right, Judgment was given for plaintiff for the £3 with 17b. costs. ; ■

LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL. .The' ordinary fortnightly meeting of tho Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Tho Mayor (Mr. T. A. Poterkin) and Councillors Baldwin, Russell, Judd, Ward, Wildsmith, O'Sullivan, Ross, Hodgens, and Hughes wcro present. . Correspondence was read from tho Bank of New Zealand approving tho application for the extension of tho limit of the'overdraft to £10,000 temporarily. Mr. V. Bernsten wroto giving up occupation of land on tho Racecourse Road. Tho. Railway Department stated that it had been arranged to Jight tho lamp on' tho northern, end of tho "platform. This would liglit the entrance to tho right-of-way. Tho Connnissioucr of Crown Lands wrote regarding tho application to take metal from Section 74, No'rmandalo, - pointing out that this section was a metal rcseryo and regretting that permission' cannot bo grantecf for this section. Messrs. Skerrett and- Wylio acknowledged receipt of a chequo for £025 for land .purchased from Mr. Strand, and notified that, tho ' conveyance from Mr. Strand to tho Council had boon completed and lodged for registration. The Wellington Rugby Union roported that it had been resolved to fall in with tho Council's request to play tho final for tho ohampionship on tho Hutt Ground on Septombor 5. Tho tenancy expires on Augiißt 31, but the Union trusted the Council would not bind them to that, but would let' tliein play tho gamo above referred ' to, which'only meant an extra five days' occupation for tho one ground. Tho Union also asked if tho'Council were prepared now to offer 'thorn' tiu, Recreation Ground for next year. 'J'ho oommitteo recommended that the Wellington llugby Union be granted permission to play the final on September 5. As to tho use of the ground for next year, tlio Town Clerk was instructed to mako inquiries in referenco to this matter, and tho committee,to report at iioxt meeting" ..."

Mr. G. J: Drewitt complained of tho drainage 'of tlio ' Fitzherhort Estate. Tho Engineer was' instructed to report on this matter. ■I'rofessor' Von Zedlitz complained that tho fence agreed to bo. orected 011 tho Reservoir site had not'yet beon constructed, and asked tliat it be attended to at once. The engineer was instructed to attend to this matter. 'Messrs. Strand' Bros, mado an application for an alteration- in tho prices charged them for gas. It was resolved that Messrs. Strand Bros, bo informed that thcro aro separate charges for power, lighting, and lighting and cooking combined, and that in their caso tho Council regret that they (Strand Bros.) do not 'come within tho bylaw in tho matter of getting tho gas for tlio combined rato, as there is a separate price where gas is taken for power only. Alessrs. Wcbloy and Boalo applied for gas to bo laid along tlio old Military Road, and undertook to tako gas for lighting and cooking. Tho matter was referred to tho engineer to roport on tho cost. On a further petition against the erection of a gas works signed by 82 persons, of whom IS wero ratepayers, No.. 2 Committeo reported as follows: —"Your Committee beg to report having further carefully considered the question of tlio gas supply to this Borough, together with tho l'otono Borough Council's last and lowest offer, and also the report from Messrs. Rix-Trott and Birch in reference to same, and cannot seo thoir way to recommend tho Council to alter their decision to erect thoir own gas works and manufacture gas on thoir own account." Tho Department of Roads wroto regarding the subdivision of Pitt Settlement, Racoqourso Road. It was decided that tho provisions of tho by-law in thq matter of tlio area required for each. section 'bo not dispensed with, and that it ho pointed out to tho Roads Dopartmont that anb-seotion (d) of Scotion 51 of tho By-laws applies only to oases affected by Rivor Board or si.milar works.

Councillor Baldwin moved the adoption of tlio Gas Committee's roport, and pointed out that, as far as figures could prove, it was certain that tho borough could produce and supply gas to the householders at a loss cost than tho price charged on tho supply from Petono. It would really mean a saving of 7;] d. per 1000 feet of gas. Tho engineer had prepared a roport, which showed that if tho borough, continued to got its supply from Potono at 4s. 3d. per 1000 foot, it would moan a loss of over £4000 in eight yours.- Ho (tho mover) could not 'understand a body of men who would recommend tho acceptance of the Potono Borough's offer in preference to building a gas works of their own.'

A deputation from tho Normandalc Battlement waited on tho Council to draw attention to tho bad stat3 of .tho road to the settlement, Mr. Marouoy acted as spokesman, and urged on tho Council tho necessity for some immediate improvement. Mr. M, Welch (Hutt- Gdunty Council) was present, and corroborated remarks of .tho previous speaker, and asked tho Council to favourably consider somo improvement. He also pointed'out tho danger to children crossing tho railway at tho level crossing. , The Mayor promised- the deputation that tho Council would consider their requests. Aftor. discussion it was decided to refer tho a 'ion of moro light pn the. Nonnandalo to tho Gas Committee. Tho Engineer reported that metal was already being put on tho road."

Mr. Hugh A. Bagley, who lias been in charge of tho Ilutt Pharmacy for somo time, is leaving for Fcatherston, where ho haß purchased the businoss of tho lato Mr. S. O'Donovan. Mr. Bagley was formerly with Messrs. Burroughs, Wellcome, and Co,, in London and Sydney. Tho building of the now courthouso for tho Ilutt is already 'startod. Tho 'contractors, Mqssrs. Adams, liavo commoncod tho foundation work, and ' tho material is arriving on tho site daily. Tho building will be of. brick and should prove a very welcome • addition to the public buildings of tho borough. Good progress i 3 being made with tho construction of tho now Melling bridgo over tho Hutt River at Camp Road. Tho steel cables to carry tho structure aro already drawn across tho.' stream, and a fow weeks should show further progress. This bridgo should propo a groat boon to residents at tho northern part of the borough, as it will onablo thom to get to the train .without tho'long walk to the Hutt station.
