PALMERSTON NORTH.

The Rivers Commission, consisting of Messrs. A. D. Thomson (chairman), Vickerman, Short, and Robinson, left for Ashhurst on their tour of inspection by tho early train yesterday morning. Prom Ashhurst tl\oy drovo to Pchangina, from which place they proceeded along the river bank. They wero accompanied by Mr. E. J. Armstrong, secretary of tho Rivers Commission, and Mr. R. W. Browne, chairman of the Pohangina County Council. Mr. J. Slack, of Awapuni, is at present suffering from a sovoro attack, of pneumonia. Dr. Makgill passed through South by the express yesterday. Further milk samples in connection with tho town supply liavo been taken by tho health authorities. Tho All Saints' Ladies' Guild bulb show will bo bold during the week. The Opposition supporters aro displaying considerable energy in favour of Mr. D. Buick/ and promises of support have been received from unexpected sources. The Rollo-Tracey match has been fixed for October 15.

It is reported that Mr. Smith, who lias filled the position of station-master hero for tho past nine years, is to bo transferred to Auckland.
