The Timaru correspondent of tho -"Lyttelton Times" reports that a movement in favour of the institution of the Northern Union game' is. on foot in South Canterbury, the movers being men who have been keenly interested in Rugby. They complain of the policy of tho New Zealand Rugby Union, I which they say is to accumulate money at tho expenso of affiliated unions, and they express dissatisfaction with tho methods of the South Canterbury Rugby Union. Should the game bo started in South Canterbury next year it is said that fully a dozen of the men comprising tho teani which toured tho North Island will play, under Northern Union rules, whilo a large proportion of tho members of at least two of tho senior clubs will support it, and it is anticipated that there will bo no difficulty in forming two clubs, each playing'a senior team, in Tiinaru, whilo Temuka is expected to provide a third. Support has also been promised by ono or more of the-junior clubs. In order to put tho gamo on a footing, ono enthusiast has promised to furnish £50, which, with other promises, williriako fully £100. This will easily cover the rent of playing grounds. It is the purpose of tho Northern Union players to 'preserve thoir status as amateurs, with the exception that, when sent on tour, membors of representative teams will probably receive eight shillings por day to compensate them for their loss of time. It is considered unreasonable to expect junior and lower grade players to Bpend four or five shillings every week or two for travblling expenses, and thoro is a proposal to pay half the expenses of these teams. Any other profits will bo,, used to assist'tho, clubs in erecting training sheds and other buildings. / AUSTRALIAN CAME. The City and Wellington Clubs will meet to-day at the Basin Reserve. City will be represented by the following players who are requested to be on the ground a"t 2.35 p.m. sharp :—Dooloy, M'Whae, Smith, O'Connell, Galland, Payne, Jacobs, Houso (2), Spotswood, Wright, ■ Mah'oney, Beale, Stirling, 'Baxter, Rowe.
