WELLINGTON LETTER-CARRIERS.

ANNUAL DINNER. The sixth annual dinner of the Wellington Lottor-Carriers' staff was held at St. Peter's Hall last evening, about' 150 guests sitting down to the repast. Tho chair was occupied by Mr. J. Johnston (Clerk-in-Charge). 'Apologies for absenco were received ffom Messrs. J. ..A. Euttori (Chief Postmaster), JR. B. Morris .(Inspector .of Money Order Offices), and G. B. Dall (Inspector of Post Oflices). .' Among those present were: —Tho Mayor (tho Hon. I'. W. Hislop), Messrs. D. Robertson (Secretary), W, 11. Morris (As-sistant-Secretary), J. K. Logan .(Superintendent of Electric Lines), •G. Worsfold (Clerk-in-Charge, Post Ofßco counter), F. V.' Waters (Chief Clerk), E. C. Gannaway (Assistant-Postmaster), C. B. Mann (As-sistant-Controller of Stores), A. Alexander (Mail Room Supervisor), W. Beswick .(Accountant), and C. H:'.lzard, W. H. P. Barber, F. M. B, .Fishor, M.l Vs. ■ The toast of "The City of, AYellington" was proposed by Mr. A. Alexander, and tho Mayor replied. In proposing "The Health of tho Government," • Mr. E. C. Gannaway' said that postal officers wero debarred ■ from. taking an activo part in politics, but tho stair had a lot to bo thankful for to the present .Gov* eminent. Tho increases of wages must represent an enormous sum, but they wero justified. Tho kindly feeling which had .always existed between all tho heads and tho staff was very pleasing. • In reply, tho Prima Minister referred to the fine feeling existing between tho public and tho rank and.file in. the. sorvico,. Tho great increases in tbo work of the* Department certainly showed" the..'marvellous, activity going on, and ho wished to congratulate one and all upon the woHc'thoy were doing. (Applause.) He laid stress' on',th'e'import-' anco of their work, and he thought lie was right in saying that it had been ' done exceedingly well. The carriers knew that, they carried the credit of the Department to a large extent in their hands, and this made them realise their responsibilities. Of courso, little slips happened, but. he congratulated his hearers on the general,absence of/trouble of any kind. A carrier.never,..knew, what passed through his hands, ..and .among arti-. cles that had been dealt,,with were two interesting medals in connection-with'. Captain Scott's expedition to tho''Antarctic, regions. In 1891 thero, were 111 carriers, who received a total salary of £10,775, per annum, an average of £97. To-day^,.there wero-382, receiving an aggregate salary: of £39,750, an average of £104. It devolved upon, the Department and tho Government •to., make the service efficient by paying, -fairly and-fully for tho work done. .Ho..concluded:by-refer-ring to tho good feeling existing between Ithe l rank and file of .the service,'-and the executive officers, naming particularly Messrs. D. ftobcrtson, J. K. Logan, R. B: 'Morris, 'and F. V. Waters and others. A lengthy toast list was'also gone through:
