IDS TELEGRAPH —FtfESS ASSOCIATION,^ SEVERE EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS. Walroa, August 21. A very sharp shook of earthquake was es perienced at 2.53 this morning, also a'sligbl ono the previous morning. Napier, August 21. Two exceptionally severe earthquake shocks wore experienced at 2.45 this morning. Their duration was half a minute. No damago is reported. ' Walpawa, August 21. A long earthquake' was experienced her* about 2.45 a.m. UNCUSTOMED SHAWLS. Chrlstchurch, August 21. Thomas William Bates, a joiner from thA steamer Mamari, was this morning ordered to pay £3, the value of four shawls smuggled ashore by him from tho steamer, and alsd 12s. duty. Ho said he had paid only 10s. for the shawls at Teneriffe, but tho Commissioner of Customs assessed their value at £1 12s. When asked if any uncustomed goods were in his possession, Bates told the Cus-. Toms officer he had only half a crown's wort)' of tobacco. TOWN CLERK APPOINTED. Oamaru, August 2L Mr. P. W. Kent, of Dunedin, was appointed Town Clerk to-night. Thero wer< 54 applications. . CRUELTY TO HORSES. Hastings, August_2l. The Stipendiary Magistrate, Mr. • Riddel] this morning convicted John Judin and Johl Olsen of cruelly ill-treating three horses. The police gave evidence that the horses were worked in the plough. One, a framework of skin and bones, fell in the furrow, and waa left to die. Judin was fined £3 and costs 4s. Olsen, on account of his youth, was ordered to come up for sentence when-called upon. BURGLARS DISTURBED. New Plymouth! August 21. Shortly after midnight the head waiter at the White Hart Hotel, while returning from a dance, disturbed what appears to < have been preparations by burglars to break open the landlord's safe. In the sitting-room adjoining the bar, where the safe stands, were found four-plugs of gelignite, two with caps attached, and two lengths of fuse. A. window of-the bar parlour was open, and' a light was found in the- sitting-room. On approaching the hotel the waiter noticed two men about tho premises, but.attached no, importance to their presence until the discovery was made which leads to the supposition that a clumsy attempt was about to be made to rob the safe. ,
FIRE. Auckland, August 21. A fourteen-roomed house in Paris ; - Street, Newmarket, owned and occupied by Mr. Charles, Outhwaito, and the Misses Outhwaite, was completely destroyed by. fire to-night. The building was insured in the Northern Union Company for £400. NORTH AUCKLAND RAILWAY. . Auckland, August : 21, The Council of the Auckland Chamber of .Commerce at its meeting last evening dealt. with a communication from the _Whangarei Chamber concerning the extension :of the North Trunk Line. The communication stated that at a conference' held at Whangarei on July 16 decisions had been come to that the time had arrived if or a united-effort by Auckland members of Parliament to secure a ■ substantial vote of not'less than £150,000 a ' year for I;he expeditious pursuance of the' Trunk Line north of Auckland from Wellsford to Maungaturoto, and that the Government should be asked to build this line before the end of 1909. The chairman ,(Mr. • L. J. Bagnall) described the agitation as j one which the members wero all in sympathy with. Ho moved that a communication, should be sent to the Government in Bup--. port of the agitation for the extension of the line. The motion was carried. - U NON-STRIKERS REWARDED. ■ - Auckland, August 21, Two tramway employees, Reuss and Spry, who refused "to participate'in the recent strike, were yesterday presented by the secretary of the Employer' Association;with £118 12s. Gd., subscribed as a recognition of spirit of devotion which actuated them. ; ARCHBISHOP REDWOOD. , Napier, August 21. Archbishop Redwood, who 'is on a visit to Napier, was to-night presented with an .address convoying greetings from the Catho* lie Club. . : NEWS-IN BRIEF. • - - Tlmaru, August 21. The results of the year's work of tha Farmers' Co-operative Association- show that .the loss by. the big fire was_ £2822.
