Mrs. Hains' declares Thornton Hains— who is the author of "penny horribles" — to bo the villain of the tragedy, and makes serious allegations regarding army life at isolated posts. '. Hains, a United States officer of note, who. served in the Spanish War and oh the Canal Commissions, retiring in 1901 It would appear that the' brothers, armed with revolvers, ■' waited ' for Anniss at Long Island, and when the publisher landed from a steamer, the'' captain snot him six times, while the. authdr held back the crowd with his revolver. Mrs. Anniss, fearing trouble, had vainly tried tojrevent her husband landing. ' . . The. author, Thornton Jenkins Hains, seems to be a man of many parts, for one account of him states that "he has served his time at sea, and is a licensed navigator of oceans for vossels of moTe than 700 tons gross, having passed the United States inspectors, and holding both English Board of Trade and American navigator's licenses.
