Mr. G. F. Moore's brood mares, Ma Mie Rosette and Armistice, were shipped South last night on a visit to Charlemagne 11. Polycaste, Lady Helen, Miss Penelope and St. Lyra-have gone to Waikanae stud. The. first two .visit Kilcheran, and the last two Achilles. ■ Several more of the Birkenheads are to be schooled at Hastings so that it is probable the Karamu stable will bo well represented in all the big jumping events this season. If others of the imported horso's stock take to the jumping business as kindly as Audax we should near, a little less talk about the', dearth of good steeplechasers. From the Wanganui Jockey Club we liavo received the Clutys programmo for the 19081909 season from which it is seen that the two principal handicaps -.at tho Autumn meeting havo , been increased so that the Wanganui Cup'will now be worth 650 sovs and the Wanganui Stakes 350 sovs. Several other increases in ■ stakes'.: have also been made.. The .booklet contains the. list of nominations for the Wanganui Guinoas andthe Jackson Stakes, and other useful ..in-' formation. , • " Wailotho has got to, the top of tho handicap at last, 'being allotted 9st. in the Mai'ton Handicap. This useful mare won six races last season, and opened tho new racing year' by annexing one of the principal flat races at tho-Grand .National meeting, so that she has. earned her weight. ,

, Nothing definite has been decided j r et, but I believe-it is quite .likely .that Gold Crest, will bo taken to the other side .to fulfill his engagement in the Epsom Handicap, and that Taitoko will accompany him and ■ race in some of the' minor handicaps. Should thoy go, C. Jenkins will mako the trip : to ride them. ' ['[ Soultline and Gold Crest both faco the starter at Randwick, sportsmen will bo able 'to form- a good idea, of now the milers iii 'the Dominion compare with those in tho Commonwealth. •'
At the. recont race meetings in Johannesburg tho totalisator- returns have shown a very large increase: over the previous year's returns, and it is gonerally considered that tho period of depression in the Transvaal racing world is at an end,
Mr. H. F. ChisholLn,- of Sydney, paid a visit to the Waikanae Stud Farm on Wednesday for the purpose of having a look at St. Ambrose and Achilles. Needless to say he expressed a high'opinion of both horses, and was also greatly taken with some of the brood maros he saw there. Ho considers the stud an'ideal_ spot .for the rearing of' •young bloodstock; 'tho pasturage" being ox- ' collent,' the shelter adequate, and >' the cli-' mate (as far as lie coijld judge) delightful..
, While in Christchurch Mr. Chisholm made an offer for a yearling filly by St.-Ambrose, but the youngster is to .be kept for the annual sale in November.
Entries for the Avondalo Cup and a couple of other-events at tho Avondale Jockey Club's Meeting i are due to-night.

At Yarmouth in July the County Court Judge refused to hear an action over betting transactions. On tho ■ case being opened and the plaintiff going irito the box his Honour stopped the hearing, and said, that he had determined to stand by the plain language of the statute, which said "no action shall be brought." He would .therefore- strike, outi'this case.. On the application of : the defending ' barrister, he allowed the bookmaker his costs. It was not illegal, ho said, for people to bet, but if they could not recover their bei;s they lost their money.- . The whole intention of the Act was that the time of the Court should not be taken np with such cases. Though defendant had not availed himself of the Gaming Act, his Honour said he could take judicial notice of it.
