THE "CORRALLITE" FILTER.

,A REMARKABLE INVENTION. \ ■ A-highly successful trial was held at' Messrs. Johnston-and Co.'s warehouse yesterday of-tho new "Corrallite" filter) in connection with which the Corrallite. Patent Filter Company was registered yesterday. It is not a filter in the ordinary acceptation of the word, as it ■ only does its work under pi cssure (most effectively when that pressure is j.OOlbs. to the square inch or over), but under such conditions ( it shows what really can bs done in'the purification of water both for drinking, and commercial purposes. Tha ! filter is a powerful iron cylinder, with two compartments, the uppermost, which is much the larger, containing a' small column of Oarnaru stone, so firmly held ina watertight socket that all water finding .egress must percolate through the. stone: Round the stone is coiled a copper pipe punctured with holes, which can be connected with" highpressure water, or a steam nipe for the thorough cleansing of the stone without dismantling the hermetically-sealed filter. But ' ordinarily the sediment is run off through a slush tap connected with, the interior of tho " cylinder. To demonstrate the attributes of this filter a quantity of muddy surface water was passed through it under, pressure. It ' was foul and murky, liquid matter, snch as might bo seen in a street cutter on a wet day, but on turning on the filter tap, water, - clear, ran out. A solution of water and .Rickett's blue, was then tried, with tho same surprising result. < It is also claimed . that this filter will strain off all oily and greasy matter from water, and its nso for ' correcting"- the water from boilers in order that it may be used over and over again is ' j considered a foregone conclusion, , and: in' \ that regard it should be of the greatest value ' in big works and factories using steam-driven ' machinery and on steamers. Tho filter.has undergone successful trials in England, iiitf • . . it is the' intention of the company .to giva further trials in Wellington to show tha value of tho machine in purifying greasy exhaust feed water for use again. The filter lias been tested in several large works iu Wellington and elsewhere, ' and the testi- . monials are merely leaves of a chorus in; praise of the new invention, ■ ' . I
