Inr TELEcnAPH—rnEss association.^ ST. HELENS HOSPITAL. STATEMENT BY HON. G. FOWLDS. Auckland, August 17. . - Replying to a deputation to-day the Minister for Public Health, the Hon. G. Fowlds, said no one was ever excluded from St. Helens homes merely because they had not the money to pay down. There was always a large amount of arrears, said the Minister, and it was astonishing how soon people forget to pay after they left the institution. Others paid off in weekly instalments of 2s. Gd." No one will ever appeal in vain to St. Helens to get skilled treatment at her own home," concluded Mr. Fowlds. - '■
ENGINEERS' AWARD; POSITION OF COPPERSMITH.. Dunadin, August 17. The Arbitration Court to-day took the tesfl' case Inspector of Factories v. A. and T. Burt, Ltd. The citation, which stated that the respondent firm had failed to pay competent coppersmiths the rate of wages, Is. 4}d. per hour,' prescribed in "the engineers' award, involved the interpretation of clauses in the award'respecting coppersmiths.' Tho Court held (Mr. MfCullough disseritiilg) that the interpretation to' be put on the award is that the: worker is only entitled to . bo paid wages fixed by the-award for engineers when he is actually engaged in some of the work specified in the award: that is : to say, a worker'is entitled to be paid Is. 4Jd. per hour when actually. engaged on all marina work, stationary engine work, brewery work, and copper jacketed pan work. The Court held there was no breach of the award, and dismissed, tho application. ■
AN INFANT FOUND IN A COAL BOX. Wanganul, August 17. About sis o'clock this'evening an infant, apparently .about, .three, months old, waa found in a coal box at the rear of an unoccupied house in Campbell Street. A man working' in his garden heard cries about three o'clock, but tako'any notice, thinking it was a neighbour's child. As the cries continued, however, he made an investigation with tho result that he found the child and took it to his wife, who is! acting the Good Samaritan. ' Tho child is dressed in a long white. gown, well-wrapped in flannels, and a whito shawl. It is healthy-looking'and wellnourished. 'The house where the child was found is near St. John's railway station, and the police think'tie infant may have been deposited by some one who came by train.
HASTINGS, STREET DEMONSTRATION. ..Napier, August 17. Cases in which Leslie Fowler, William Stack, and Matthew Johnson were charged with'behaving in a manner likely.to causo a breach of ' tho peace at Hastings (an outcome .of , the hostile demonstration' against tho polico after tho hearing of some betting ■ cases) were beforo tho Court to-day, when'' defendants' applied for a change of 'venuo to Hastings. This was vigorously opposed : by. Inspector Macdonald, and the polico offering no evidgnco, tho cases were dismissed. SUDDEN DEATH. " ' ' ' ■ August l l7; : Mrs. .Cameron, wife of John C. Cameron,' manager of the- Jewellery Department at D. Benjamin- and Co., died very suddenly' this morniug. Deceased, who has enjoyed'the best of health; woke at' an'-early hour, apparently in her normal state/ and conversed '■ cheerfully with her husband; but 'shortly after sis : o'clock complained of pains' in ' • the head, which increased in intensity, and ■ losing consciousness she passed away before medical assistance could be summoned. There ■ is reason to believe that cerebral affection was tho cause, of death. Deceased leaves a family of live sons and two daughters. ' ..: SMALL BIRDS NUISANCE.
