THE LATE SHAH AND QUEEN VICTORIA.
The reminiscences of. Lady RandolphChurchill (Mrs. Cornwallis West) in tlio " Century Magazine" for July, contain a reference to tho London visit of tho lato Shah of Persia, Nasr-ed-Din. One night at a banquet at Buckingham Palace ho was asked to give his arm to Queen Victoria. Ho refused flatly, having mado up his mind to take in a lady whose voluminous proportions had attracted his attention. Much pressure had to bo brought to -bear before he was prevailed upon to change his mind. With' reluctanco and a cross face, it is said that he-dragged tho.Queen along as ho strode into tho dining-room. Another night at the opera, to tho despair of , his suite, he sat with a glum countenance, evidently much bored, until tho orchestra during the entr-acte began to tuno their instruments. At these discordant sounds tho Persian monarch brightened up, and, applauding vigorously, asked for an encore.
