Hearing of tho assault on a sleeping woman, the whites invaded the negr<> quarter, and clubbed the negroes with sticks and revolver butts. ' '

A drink-enraged mob dominated Springfield throughout the night. Firing by tho. troops at the legs of the crowd restored partial order. Whites from the neighbouring towns are 'swarming in. to assist in tho racial war. INNOCENT MEN LYNCHED. THE TROOPS AND THE MOB. (Rec. August 17, 9.50 p.m.) London, August 17. ' Tho Washington correspondent of "The Times" describes the gratuitous brutality of the mob at Springfield as surpassing any racial excesses of recent years.

Wheal tlio mob attempted to lynch two negroes in gaol, 0110 of whom was accused of an assault on a whito woman, officials took both of them away in a motor car. The mob, foiled, then wrecked a restaurant belonging to the owner of the motor car.

Soldiers, joined in the tussle at this stage, and killed two and wounded twenty persons. The mob then rushed the negro quarter, from which all the negroes had taken refuge in tho arsenal or the suburbs. Tho mob destroyed their property. Two innocent negroes, caught by : the mob, wero lynched. An attempt to reach the arsenal was frustrated. ' , A brick seriously injured' Mr. Claffin, the Prohibition party's candidate for tho Presidency. Ho was struck on the head while shielding a negro.

\ Renter's Springfield, correspondent states that cavalry charged tho mob. The riots aro quelled, but the situation of tho negroes is piteous. Few of them dare t-o venture into tile'streets.-
