Bryan, Democratic candidate for tho Presidency, addressing a gathering of 18,000 people at Lincoln, Nebraska, said lis accepted nomination for the Presidency. He held the Republicans responsible for abfises practised by commercial corporations, because they applied opiates instead of using tho surgeon's knife. Personally, he favoured a tariff for rovenue purposes only. He advocated tho election of senators by direct vote of the people, instead of by the Stato Legislatures. He declared that tho overshadowing issuo of the present election waß: "Shall the people rule?" The speech was received by the large audionco with great enthusiasm.
