FATAL TRAIN ACCIDENT.
MAN RUN OVER AT THORNDON. A shocking railway fatality occurred at Thoriidoii yesterday evening, a man, who, up to a lato hour last night, had not been identified, being run over by the 6.20 p.m. train from the Manawatu Station to Paekakariki. No details about the actual accident could be obtained last night, the train continuing on its journey up tlio lino before the statements of the engine-driver and Dremau could be- obtained b.y the police. _ '{ The first information received by tho police was from tho Manawatu Railway Station', and was to the effect that a -mau had been run over by a train at tho railway crossing opposite the Esplanade Hotel. Several constables wcro sent to tho scone of tho accident, and it was found that tho body of tho mttn had been extracted from under tho engine, and had beou examined by Dr. Henry. Tho body was fearfully mangled, having been dragged about 80 yards by tho train.
Deceased was a man apparently between 40 and 50 years of age, with a dark moustache and hair turning grey. He was about sft. 4in. highland strongly built, and was wearing two pairs of trousers, a pair of moleskins covering a pair of tweed trousers, also blucher boots, and a tweed cap. Two pipes and 4s. 2d. were the only tilings found in tlio pockcts, which contained absolutely no papers to indicate who the man was.
The .body was removed to tlio■■ Morguo, where an inquest will be held to-da.v.
