To-day the Prime Minister, the Hon. J. M'Gowan, tlio Hon. J. A. Millar, tho Hon. Dr. Findiay, aiul tho Hon. G. Fowlds will bo at Auckland, tho Hon. W. Hall-Jones at Wellington, tho Hon. J. Carroll at Christchurcli, and the Hon. R. M'Nab in Otago. Mr. William M'Nicklo has been appointed Registrar for Births, Deaths and Marriages at Hulls. Mr. John Samuel lang, of Hokitika, has been appointed a member of tho Board of land Purchase Commissioners. Tho appointment of Mr. James Halligan, as Registrar of Brands for the Wellington district in succession to Mr. A. Mills, retired, is gazetted. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., has been appointed chairman of the licensing Committees for tlio districts of Hawke's Bay, Napier, and Waipawa, in succession to Mr. S. E. McCarthy, S.M. Mr. Stewart Nowall (son of Colonel Nowall), manager for .tho South British Insurance Company at Hong-Kong, _ leaves for Sydney to-day en route to China. Misß Newall will accompany her brother to HongKong. .
Tlio Governor has approved of tho award of tho Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' decoration to Captain J. E. Barltrop, of tho Manchester Rifles, Foilding, who has a total rank awl, commissioned servico of over twenty years;
A Napier Press Association telegram states that Inspector MacDonell lias arranged' to rotiro from tlio police force at an early date. Sub-Inspector Dwyer arrived from Christchurch on Wednesday night to tako charge of the Napier district in tho meantime.
Mr. J. Schwartz, of Christchurch, leaves for America to-day in connection with the sale of the patent rights of tho Rogotirc Non-Puncture Tire Company. It is possible that Mr. Schwartz will dispose of tho world's rights of the Company in the United States.
Mrs. Edmund Cook, sister of Mrs. James Brown, of tho City Council's clcrical staff, lias died in Dunedin. Mrs. Cook, who was born in Wellington, married -Mr. Edmund Cook, who was at one timo postmaster at Timaru, and who was a brother of Messrs. H. and J. Cook, of Makara, and Mr. R. Cook, of Wadcstown. Ho died three years ago. , . •
A representative of one of the noble families of Franco is at present touring the North Island" in the person of Due do Broglie, a princo of the Holy Roman Empire. The Duke, who is accompanied by M. J. T. Riollo, is only making a flying trip, as his itinerary compels him to leave for Australia this week. From there 110 will proceed via Adelaide, Fremantlo, and Colombo to Singapore.

M. lewis, Oriental Bay, 011 Wednesday, that gentleman's first wifo having boon tho only daughter of tho deceased. Mrs. Brown was born, in Sunderland in 1832, and camo out to Nov,- Zealand in 1876, and settled in this citj'j where her husband died eighteen years ago. Sir. Charles Brown, of Palmorston North, was her only son. -
Tlio Rev. Dr. Gibb, of Wellington, spoke on behalf of New Zealand Presbyterians at the recent meeting, in Edinburgh, l of tho Assembly of the Established Church of Scotland (states tho Rev. Dr. Erwin, of Christchurch, in a letter written from Dub111 tho Irish Assembly "Dr. GibU was called upon to speak second, after the rcjpresontativo from Canada, and," says Dr. Erwin, "ho made ; a_ first-class speech, which inado. a very good impression upon tho Assembly."
Tho Albert medal of tho Royal Society of Arts for tlio present year has been awarded, with the approval of his Royal Highness tho President, to Sir James Dewar, M.A., D.Sc., LL.D., F.R.S., "for his investigations into tho liquefaction of gases and the properties of matter' at low temperatures, investigations which liavo resulted in the production of tho lowest temperatures yet reached; the uso of vacuum vessels for thermal isolation, and tho application of cooled charcoal to the separation of gaseous mixtures and to the productions of high vacua."
Captain R. Stevenson, D.5.0., who was in South Africa with tho 3rd, 6th, and 10th New_ Zealand contingents, is at present in Wellington. Captain Stevenson shares with Captain Harper the distinction of having tho longest stretch of continuous service registered by any officer of tho Now Zealand contingents, which visited South Africa. Ho has conio to Wellington for tho purpose of interviewing the Council of Defence on behalf of several contingent officers in various parts of tho Dominion who wish to bo afforded facilities to attend classes of instruction and manoouvro camps for tlio purpose of keeping themselves abreast of tho times as regards military knowledge.
