FLOCK OF SHEEP STOLEN.
FRENCH- THIEF'S EXPLOIT. -'. An exploit reminiscent of tho Middle Ages, namely, the raiding of a flock of 350 sheep jusVoutside Paris, arid the death of the shepherd in' circumstances which point to murder, is one of the latest Parisian sensations. The sheep were grazing on waste land on- the banks of the River Marne, under tho care of an old man, who was known as Pore Fritz. On Juno 26, a man, attracted by tho howling of the shepherd's dog, entered tho small, movable hut in which Pore Fritz slent and found him'lying dead. The sheep had gone, but wero soon traced, as the flock had obstructed' tho tramcars while they wero being driven acrossi'tlic Charentori'Bridgo. Following this clue tho police arrested at a publichouse. near Mont Parnasso Station a young man named Ma viol,-who confessed to having sold tho sheep at Pantin and La Villettc markets, for £626. Ho declared that ho only acted as-the agent of two men who had the appearance of horse dealers, and professed entire -ignoranco as to whence tho flock camel That ho had accomplices seems evident from tho fact that taxes to the ■amount of £64 were paid on tho sheep passing tho octroi.' Maviel spent nearly £40 of the proceeds of tho sale buying.a watch and chain, several 1 suits of clothes and other articles. The remainder of the' £626 was found on "him. It appears that several previous attempts to raid tho flock had been frustrated by tho vigilance of, Printemps, tho sheep dog, which is-still faithfully guarding the empty hut.—Router., , ■
