WOMEN AS CHEMISTS.
INTERESTING BALLOT BY THE CHEMICAL SOCIETY. "It is inexpedient publicly to oncourago women to adopt chemistry as a professional pursuit." In this ooncise way is expressed tho view of tlioso members of the Chemical Society of Great Britain who disapprovo of the proposal to allow women to become members.
Out of 3-100 papers read on personal researches during the past thirty-five years, only twenty-three have been contributed by women alone. Tliero is a growing desiro, however, on the part of many of our leading scientists to admit women chemists to membership, and as tho wish has met 'with tho strongest opposition from other members, tho question is being put to a ballot. Mine. Curie is at present tile only woman momlior, and sho has been , mado merely an "honorary .fellow" with neither voting powers nor eligibility for offico on the council.
