The Union Steam Ship Company received a cablegram from its Sydney office to-day which stated that the' steamer Hawea had her tail shaft broken on July 30. During tho first twenty-four hours after tho accident tho Hawea drifted 11 dog. north anc] 35 miles caat. On tho sccond day she drifted 9 deg. north, and 30 miles oast. The second and third officers and a boat's crew left the Hawea at 110011 last Saturday 45 miles south-south-east from Ball's Pyramid, and landed at Lord Howo Island. The news apparently was then conveyed by stoamer from Lord Powo Island to Norfolk Island, and thence cabled to Sydney. Tho landing party reported that there wero amplo provisions aboard the Hawea; and all hands wero well. Captain Todd, of tho Flora, now out in search, proposed to visit Three Kings, thonco proceed towards Norfolk Island, thonco 29 deg. south and zig-zag to Lord Howe Island, and thonco to Newcastlo. The following of this courso should enable tho Flora to find the Hawea. The Haupiri, which was also to search for the Hawea, has now been recalled to her running. The Itakanoa leaves Auckland to-morrow, and will shape her course direct to Lord Howe Island. The Moana, leaving Sydney to-day, will deviate from her course to keep a lookout for tho drifting steamer, prolonging the search if necessary so as to arrivo at Auckland on Tuesday. NAMES OF CREW. Tho Moana, which sailed at 8 p.m. for Auckland, is fitted with a crow's nest on tho foremast, took an extra supply of rockets, and will keep a sharp look-out for tho Hawea. "When sho reaches the vicinity of Lord Howo Island she will make a zigzag course.

A telegraph notice from Cape Maria Van Diomen reports that tho Haupiri and Flora arrived from east at 10 a.m. yesterday. An hour later tho Haupiri proceeded east, and at noon tho Flora left for Newcastle, heading for tho Three Kings in search of tho Hawea.
