THORNDON QUAY GAR.
Sir, —May I, through your columns, draw attention to the slack way in which the 0110 o'clock lunchnon ear is run to Thorndon Es-< planado? This ; car- passes through town a few minutes past 0110 o'clock behind a Tinakori Road and a Seatoun car, and on arrival at Government Station has to wait until the Seatoun car is switched and reversed. This is done in tho most doliberato manner. About this timo thoro i 8 an empty palaco car run from tho Jervois Quay lino to Manawatu Station, timed to follow the Thorndon' Quay car, but dui;ing;tko manoeuvring of *tho Seatoun vehicle this superfluous car gets in front of tho Thorndon Quay car, necessitating another wait at tho Manawatu switch. These delays are vexatious; To-day (August 11),' however, thoro were 110110 of these delays, because there was 110 one.o'clock Thorndon Quay car, due presumably to 0110 'of those tired old waggons lying down refusing to bo whackcd round tho awful curves and switches which occur on this lino. f
No effort was mado in any way to copo with this gap . in the service. Tho emptypalaco car dodged away, empty, before the passengers from, other city cars could connect. There wore several cars and men lonf 7 ing'(the'word'is used advisedly) round, but none was sent to Thorndon Quay. Why the Manawatu car could not wait" for passengers, and-then run on to the Esplanade, passes tho comprehension of the lay mind. Tho passengers for Grant Road and Lowor Tinakori
Road packed into an already crowded Karori car, and tho servico went merrily on, all run j apparently-for the amusement of . our Mayor and the edification of tho tramway men. There is a dreadful slackness manifest in tho traffic department, particularly at tho Government Station. Tho object lesson of the Sydney strike should give our Mayor heart to tighten tho strings a littlo. Perhaps ho will —in December.—l am, etc., CONDENSER, August 11. [The Cjty Electric,ll Engineer is inquiring iflto the cpiflplaint made.] ' THE HUTT GAS SUPPLY, Sii'j—Tho loader ef tho deputation to tho 1-lutt Pprnugb Council about tlm IJiitt gas siipply Stated that "The Petoiio Borough had its' works for nine years, and last ypar was the first year any profit was made, and t]iat then t)ip, prpfit was only a littlo pvor £100." It is always well to bo correpfc as to facts, therefore tlio public ought to know that according to tho published balance-slieets of tlio Petono Borough Council, thp prpfit made but pf the manufacture of gas for tho year ending March 31, 1906, .was £1024, opt of this they paid some £774 odd for plant arid material.(which,.of course, is profit), leaving 'a net balance of £267 lis. 7. In the year ending March 31,1907, tho profit shown was £1722 17s. 10d., viz., street lighting, £279 os. 7d.; plant and material, £720 ss. Bd.; meters, £190 165.; shifting cottage to works, £67 10s. 6cj. (all these items aro profit), and not balance, £460 'ss. Id. I make no comments ion those startling figures, but leave them to tho good sepso pf tho people am, etc., , iin . VJSRAX. August 12.
