TXJRAKINA LEFT PLYMOUTH. ' rile New Zealand Shipping Company have received, cabled advice that the liner Turakiua loit Plymouth on Sunday for Wellington, via iw'm- 11 and Hobart. The vessel is due iu Wellington about September 23. NEW ZEALAND TIMBER TRADE. Iho exceptionally good demand for New Zealand umber in Sydney just now has caused considerable activity amongst the regular traders to and from the.Dominion (says the "Com-mercial-News"), but, as they , are not able to carry tho timber in- sufficient quantities in order to cope with the deriiand for it, several larger vessels now in Now Zealand waters have been pressed into tho business. IMPORTS BY THE CEVIC. THE WRECK OF THE MAREEBA. - Additional particulars are to hand concerning the wreck of A.U.S.N. steamer Mareeba, which occurred about two weeks ago at Stockton Bight, ten miles south of Port Stephens. Tho Sydney "Commercial News" says that at the time of the accident the Mareeba was bound to Newcastle, and Sydney from Ilbckhampton and Brisbane with a largo and valuable cargo, principally sugar, and as she had been reported off Seal Rocks' early on Thursday afternoon, should have, in tho ordinary course, reached the northern port somewlmro 'about 10 o'clock. However, from the information to it appears that she was spoken by a vessel inward bound about 9 p.m., and was not then in trouble, and as the conditiims wero adverse, the captain apparently decided not to enter,'but remain off tho port until daylight. All tho crew " were, landed and conveyed to Newcastle." The Deputy-Superin-tendent of Navigation got into communication with tho second officer, and, beyond stating that tho steamer did not break down, nothing could_ bo. .gleaned from him. 1 The captain is standing by tho wreck, which is understood to be in a good position for refloating ifi.tho weather moderates. It is understood that the shipment .of sugar is insured. Tho Mareeba is a steel screw steamer of 1747 ■ tons gross, and 1-113 tons not register, and was formerly known as tho Harport. She was built at Sunderland by Messrs. S. P. Austin and Son, Ltd., in 1898, but did not arrive in Australian waters 'until two years later,.when she:-was-acquired by the A.U.S.N. -Company for "the*interstate trado. The following "aro the principal dimensions of the Mareeba:—Length 263.8 feet, breadth 39.3 feet, and depth 17.1 feet. She was ono of tho Company's best-known steauiors, and for a time was engaged in tho trade between Sydney, Noumea, and Fiji; but latterly has been employed as a cargo carrier. ■ The Mareeba is covered by insurance at Lloyd's in London, but- the . amount has not. transpired. The vessel is valued at about ,£20,000.

The schooner Joseph Sims, laden with timber at Kaipara, is awaiting an opportunity to sail for Wellington. To-dayj'the F.H.S. liner Fifeshire is expected to 'lcavo Port Chalmers for. tho Bluff for loading purposes. " At daylight this morning the F.H.S. liner Norfolk is fixed to leave Wellington for Lyttelton in continuance of , her discharging operations. , On Mondajr night the Government' steamer Hinemoa arrived at ltussell, having been unable to work Ngunguru in, consequence of heavy weather.

According to the approximate traffic return the receipts of the Manchester Ship Canal for May totalled as compared with £42,GS3 in May last year. For tho five months the receipts have amounted'' to £190,842, or £5122 less than in tho corresponding' period of last year.

A typhoon which raged fiercely for two hours suddenly sprang up at Hong-Kong .recently and caused considerable damage (says the Sydney "Commercial News"). Several vessels engaged in the Australian trade were in the vicinity, but up to tile present it is understood that the wliole of them escaped damage. Messrs. Gibbs, Bright and Company, agents for the E. and A. Line, have been advised by the Hong-Kong representatives of the firm that the steamer Eastern encountered the full force of the .typhoon, and came through tho ordeal uninjured.

ffitherto, only, an occasional visit has been made by steamers, not regularly engaged in the trade, to Tasmanian ports to lift hardwood for A oiv Zealand, and, as it has been found a profitable venture, it is most likely that before long another, company, the Maoriland S.S. Company; will permanently embark in the trade, ilio Company at present only owns two mors, but if the trado warrants a more regular service a number of vessels will bo acquired, so that sailing will'be more frequent, it is the intention of the Company to run the vessels from New Zealand to Melbourne with general cargo, thence back with hardwood from iasinama. The s.s. Ennerdale, now at Melbourne from Kaipara, and at present under charter to load hardwood at Port Huon will probably lie tlio pioneer vessel in the now service, for it is stated that after fulfilling 'the present engagement she will bo open to take up the running.
