■ The Bulls Hockey Club were defeated by Marton at Marton yesterday by 7 goals to nil. ' | The Bulls Senior Football Club having resigned from the Senior Shield, the contest is • now between Hunterville and Marton. A trial of. the chemical fire engine was given at Marton yesterday, but was not a success, owing, it is said, to tho chemicals used being of inferior quality. Another trial will be given on Saturday, when it is hoped more satisfactory results will bo obtained.' Tho Borough Council jnoposo to purchaso two of these engines if they prove effective.
A ' representative meeting of citizens and business u&oplo was hold at- Marton- Junction yesterday to consider the notico received:, from ..Government of its, intention to - close"'tlfe Kitchener Street gate which gives access to' the main road to Marton and tho railway station. _ It was pointed out that serious inconvenience would result if this road was closed, and that the Bailway Department had promised in 189S that the gates connecting tho main roads to the railway station would bo kept open until other access was provided. Tho Department had now given notice that this gate would bo closed in three months, dating from, June-29. The chairman-said that if this street .was .closed tho would be: most inconvenient, and the meeting should make a strong appeal against such action by the. Department. As a result of this fleeting , a strong deputation waited upon Air. Stevens, , member for Manawatu,. at Marton,, yesterday afternoon, and • after the oase was fully explained lie decided to telegraph to the Minister for Railways explaining the situation, and pointing out that tho question, was one of serious moment to a large' number of people.
