Though a light shower fell in the city last night oxcellent weather prevailed for tho opening day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting at Riecarton to-day. .The attendance was very large, and must have been /almost a record for a Winter Meeting. The visitors included the' Hon. Jas. Carroll, Sir .Wm. Russell, and a number of other North Island sportsmen. The tracks were in first-class order, good times were recorded, and some pretty racing was witnessed. Tho .Winter Cup and the Grand National Steeplechaso caused a lot of excitement, and both • races wero very interesting, and provided fine finishes. There were numerous accidents in all tho jumping events, but none of tho jockeys were injured. Over sixty bookmakers wero licensed for tho day, and did a largo amount of business, but it was a backcrs' day. The totalisator returns were very large. Audax dropped back fourth at the top, but took the lead going down tlm back, and at tho six furlong post was half a dozen lengths clear of tho field'. Leonardo threw out a challcngo at the last hurdle, but Audax came away again and won easily by four lengths, with Black Friar half a dozen lengths away third, Janella fourth, and Casabianca last. At tho end of' a 'furling the order was much the same, except that Roso Noblo was among tho first half dozen, At the fjvc furlong post Lupulito had taken the lead, his nearest attendants being Motoa and Penates. Then camo Rose Noble, North Head, All Rod, and Sir Frisco with Field Gun tailing the field. As tlioy entered tho straight Lupulito was done with, and Motoa was in tho van' with North Head and Penates handy and Swimming Belt putting- in a last run on the rails. Motoa looked to bo winning comfortably at tho fish ponds; but Oliver brought Penates along, and in a great finish won by a head with Swimming Bolt a 'couple of lengths away third, Probable close up fourth, North Head fifth, White sixth, and Harvest last, ' Time, Irnih. 44sec.
