THE BRITISH TEAM. FINANCIAL RESULT OF THE TOUR. The tour of tho English Rugby football toam, os far as Now Zealand is concorned, baring concludcd over a weojc ago, an inquiry was niado yesterday'as to' how the entor-'pj-iso had resulted financially,- Our representative was informed-that tho figures wcro not yet nynildblo, owing to a number, of out' standing accounts from tho different provin« oial unions, but roughly it was thought that the rccoipts would just about cover expcnsoß, It was explained that tbo expenses i;i this ojise included the faros to.and from England, tiioso incurred in Now. Zealand, and tbo fares to Sydnoy—in all, some £3600, This bqijig the case, it is assumed that with average luck in Australia, there should bo a substantial balance for tliq'Union as tho result of tho tour. . . WAIRARAPA ON ITS DEFEAT. (nv Tisrdiomi'Ji,—si'iiciAii cokhespondent) • Maqtertonj August-3, The Wairarapa Rugby .'representative footballers, who arrived homo to-day, 'stat'o that they were exceptionally well treatod -by tho Canterbury, Otagp, npd Southland Union 'officials, but complain that apparently tho Wellington Union-had no cognisance of a team in tho ' city when the team landed from the Christchurch' boat on Saturday morning, Tho team attributes its sovore defeat by Wellington to tho fact that fully one-third of tho better fifteen solectod -was unablo to play, and tho romaindor could not be oxpeotcd to. show up too well, as thoy had just landed from a Bea trip. RANFURLY SHIELD. • (by telegbaph—piiess association.) Auoklond, August' 3.., In connection with" tha _ first " olmllonge' match for the llanfurly Shield, the selector (Mr. D. (11l TELEOBAPJI—PUESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIOnT.) Sydney, August 3. . It has transpired that Saturday's match between tljo Mao'ris and an Australian team was not postponed on account of tho rain, but was abandoned owing to a dispute between the Maori team and the'-League over money matters. ' On Saturday tho following notice, signed by Pakere, tho secretary, and Ashcr, manager, of the team, was handed to tho secretary of the Rugby League:—"Owing to tbo delays which liavo taken placo in obtaining money for our team, tho members have dccidod to abandon to-day : a match and all other engagements." Ashcr, interviewed, stated that tho secretary of tho League, .having got an ordor of tho Ceurt to stop, money coming to certain membors, stopped it from tbo whole toam. ' . ' , "Tho moil," ho added, "want tho money they allego they arc entitled to, and are not going to play for tho benefit of the Loagnc. They may as well abandon the tour. Another thing is: When tho toam went to Brisbane we left eleven men in Sydney, but when w.o readied Newcastle wo found that these had been sent after us. .The team declined to pay tho charges of sending them to Newcastle; also some other .charges are in dispute." Ashcr stated that tho team wore paid fully up to tbo time of the Court granting An injunction. - "Our point is," lie said, "that tho money should not bo withhold' from tho men against whom thore is no injunction, and that is our legal advice. Tho League has broken its contract, and that is why. we will not pl^v,"
The League officials, ill reply, claim that they have been debarred from paying aiiy moneys to the team undpr the injunction granted in the Jack case. v ~ — A match against New South, Wales fixed for to-day will not bo played. 'It, is proposed to form a new team, which will endeavour to arrange matches between Sydney and New Zealand, ... * AUSTRALIAN CAME. (BY TELEGRAPH—rRESS ASSOCIATION'.) Auckland, Au'gusfc : 3.
