The Kaikoura Band is desirous of raising about £120 more to enable' members to proceed to- the contest at Ballarat, and with the" object of getting ' the balance made application to the City Council on Wednesday for permission to hold sacred concerts on Sunday evenings. This permission was granted, but today a deputation of clergymen representing tho Council of the' Churches waited on tho Mayor strongly protesting against the decision, and asking the Mayor to veto iti Exception was also taken to the fact that bands were paid to play on Sunday afternoons to encourage tram traffic. The Mayor refused to take action as, asked by tho deputation, 1 but said he would give ■ instructions that the concerts should not start til/ 8.25 p.m. • FERRO-CONCRETE FOR WHARVES. Auckland, July 31. The question of the stability of ferro-con-crete for wharves was brought up at to-day's meeting of tho Harbour Board in committee. The acting engineer , in a report stated that the damage that, had been caused to the piles would probably have been greater if any other material had been" used. From an examination-of: tho-piles it found that some 250 places on ; the piles showed that the steel had been ousted in many spots and had developed cracks. Tho stability .of .the wharf, however, was in no way endangered. Mr. Bradney attacked tho' whole scheme. Consideration ' was deferred until the return of the engineer (Mr. Hamer) from England, and the matter, will probably be inquired into fully in committee. NEWS EST BRIEF.
