EASTBOURNE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

THEHCTT BRIDGE. , The Eastbourne Borough Council met yesterday. ' Present: The Mayor.(Mr. F. G. Bolton), Councillors Danks, Hoivden, M'Keegan, Short, Robertson, and Mackenzie. The Mayor stated tnat in making up the estimates for the year the Council's contribution to the cost of the Hutt bridge had been overlooked. There was a probability of this work being now brought to a head, 'and he would ask the Council to increase its contribution from £10,0 to £112 10s. If the contribution was required this year, they would either have tojiemodel their rate or pay the' money out of overdraft. Owing to the remoteness of the bridge from Eastbourne, the Council had considered that £100 was enough to pay. It appeared, however,-that the adjoining landowners on the Lower Hutt side, who had agreed to find £1700 towards the cost of the bridge, were unable to find more than £1600, and the 'Mayor of /Wellington had suggested-that tho local bodies should 'increase their; contributions as follow: —City Council, Petono Borough Council, and Hutt I Borough Council each £25; Hutt County Council. and Eastbourne Borough Council, each £12 10s. The City Council had agreed to this apportionment, and so, he understood, had the i'etone Borough Council. It was doubtful whether the Hutt Borough Council would agreo. Anything which Eastbourne agreed to do was subject, he thought; to: payment of their share by tho other local bodies. Another condition of tho Eastbourne Council's contribution had been that access should be given to the bridgo from the bays by a road leading .off the main road. This had now been conceded, the owners of the proposed road forming tho connecting link wore willing to dedicate and form the road, and if tho Hutt County Council were willing to metal it there would bo a connecting road with tho bays adequate- to all requirements. The road would rnako a saving of three or four miles-from town to tho bays: ■

It was decided that the increased contribution be agreed to, but that tho sum be not taken into account _ in connection with tho incoming year's estimates, and be paid- out of overdraft if necessary. With regard to the collecting of water in front of Mr. Drummond's houso, it was decided, on the recommendation _of a special committee, that a nine-inch pipe be taken .under tho road and: a footpath made from Russo Strcot North to Mr. Hollins's house, a distanco of about fivo chains.

Tho Professional Light-weight Championship of Now Zealand will, under the auspices of tho Jlanawalu Boxing. Association, bo decided at the Opora Ilouse, Falmerston North, on Thursday, August G.
