ENGLISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. (BT TBLEGIUrn—EEEBS 'aSSOCi'aTION—COFTUiaHT.) London, July 30. H. Taylor (England) won by six yards the SOO'yardß Swimming Championship at Manchester, tho time being 6min. 14seo. T. Battorsby (England) was second, 'beating F. Bcaurepaire (Australia) by a touch. Taylor appears to bo at the height of his form again this season. He had no difficulty last year in winning the *Mojds., 500 yds., half-mile, and mile races at tho English championships. At the contests in connection with the Olympic Games lu scorcd the following successes:—First in 400-metre race; first in IfiOO-motro, contest. The 500 yds. race at the English championships in 1905 was won by Kieran (Australia), in 6min. 7 l-ssec.; in IOOC. by Taylor, in Gmin. 24 3-ssec.; and in J907 also by. Taylor, in Gmin, 22sec. Battersby. who gained second place, competed at the English championships in 1907, gaining third place in the half-mile contest. In the 1500-metre race at the Olympic Games he de feated Beaurepaire for 6econd place to Taylor by a, vard ; after an exciting struggle.
