The. steamer Mareeba, bound from Brisbane to Newcastle and Sydney, with a large general cargo, went ashore, in thick weather and a heavy sea, on the Stockton beach. There are hopes of refloating hor. The Mareeba arrived off Newcastle last night. Owiug to hoavy weather, the captain decided to stand by tjjl daylight. The steamer grounded at 4 o'clock in tho morning, during dark, dirty weather, and lies broadside on, well up on a shelving sandy beach. :' The orow had little difficulty in landing. The captain and part of the crew are standing by the vessel. An attempt to tug her off failed. It will be renewed to-night. The Mareeba is a steel screw steamer of 1747 tons gross and 1077 tons net, and was built in 189S by S. P. Austin and Son, Ltd., of Sunderland, for tho Australasian United Steam Navigation Co., Ltd. Tho principal dimensions of the vessel aro: Length, _ 203.8 ft.; beam, 39.3 ft.; draught, 17.11t. She is registered at Brisbane, and is commanded by Captain Murchie. SCOW ASHORE-CREW SAFE. (Rec. July 31, 9.30 p.m.) Sydney, July 31. The scow Hilda, at one time engaged in {.he New Zealand trade, timber-laden, is ashore at Wreck Bay. She is possibly a total wreck. The crew are safe. The deck-house on the bridge deck was carried away, and one of the crew had a leg broken.
