COLD WEATHER DIET.
Much mitigation of discomfort in the matter of cold lies with the; housewife (says an Australian paper). As a doctor recently remarked, warmth'from , within is a very valuable factor iii, mid-winter—more valuable than the application of much external clothing. Tho dietary that servos admirably in summer is inadequate as a heat: producer. ,An expert in free kindergarten work ' maintains that the children-fed-to- a-'great extent on bread and tho homely dripping are "fitter" than the majority whoso mothers provido them with bread and a "suggestion of jam. Sugar, of course, is a: heat: producer, but'sugar in jam- is counteracted by the'acid of the fruit. Fats of all sorts, .v'ogetabloVa's. well ."as animal, are beneficial ,in winter, and, if tho family is accustomed to them gradually it is apt to take to thorn, kindly. In tho matter of digestibility, cream, and butter como an easy first, and it is sound economy'to save off other things-in■order to provido them. Olive oil is all too ■< much neglected; / In conjunction with rico, ■it can bo easily popularised. . Oatmeal, haricot' beans, .and all red moats aro good ..winter fare; while tho homely shin : of beef, forming tho nucleus', of, soup mado from broso or bean meal, is something no level-headed houso mother will ignore during winter. Proper diot means'much more than a moro reduction of discomfort. It moans the ability to resist nearly all - tho 'sickness incidental to bleak weather, and to' find yourself at springtime nil tho better for tho bracing* effects of winter. - ' ■
