; SOME FIGURES FOR THE YEAR.* ; The total outputs of coal in thc'Dominion last year was-1,831,009 tons. Compared with the previous ■ year this ■ is an increase of--101,473 tons. Of /the 'total amount, 1,184,211 tons was bitumiiious and semi-bituminous coal, 22,000 tons; pitch coal, '515,797 tons brown coal, and 108,941' tons lignite coal.' ; / IV the total output northern'districts contributed 316,977 tons,-West Coast districts 1,052,022 tons, and tho southern districts, 462,010 tons. The' number of 'hands employed., was 3910 in 1907, as against 3692 in 1906. ,Of this number 1143 worked above ground, and .2767' bolow ground. The West Coast'mines employed 2158 of tho total of 8910.Tho'number of deaths from accidents was 12,' and -31 persons .were injured. The lives lost'averaged 3.07 per 1000. ; In 1878 tho output of coal in the Dominion' was 162,218 tons, and 513 persons wero en-, gaged, aiid in 1907 1,831,009 tons were obtained; and; 3910 persons' were employed. ■Tho.output has shown a steady increase each year, last year being'the largest. '
