WELLINGTON RACING
CLUB BALL. I - A BRILLIANT ; SCENE. TJio Town Hail presented a very gay and brilliant, not to say. gleaming, appearance last . night-, when the Wellington Racing Club gave its annual'ball. The eiitranco hall •was carpeted with crimson, and decorated with'palms and ferns, from''among which a largo brown liorso gazed tranquilly at all arrivals, caring • little for tho beajity of the frocks displayed to his gaze. Tile, main stairs woi'o carpeted and decorated with, ferns, pre: paring one for the scene within tho hall itself, where there was a blaze of light and colour. From tho ceiling in a long lino, as from tho roof of a .marquee, hung broad bands ■ of red • and white —tho club colours—and red and white draperies festooned the sides of the . gallery, and the front of the stage. Long strings of vari-coloured lights were festoonetf from tho ceiling to ; tho gallery, and mingled with the drapery on tho skies. At either side of the lialb was a huge doorway horseshoo shaped and twined with red. Tho red curtained alcoves of the previous night had beon enlivened with cream laco curtains, one end of tho hall was closed in with mirrors, thus doubling tho apparent spaciousness of tho hall; the stage was a mass of greenery, lighted with scores of little coloured lights, and in the front of it a fountain played. Supper was laid in the Concert Hall -where the same scliemo of colour was carried out, and racing emblems • were skilfully /worked into: tlio decorations of the meats. The' decora-' lion of tho hall was done by Messrs. Evans and Son, florists, and the supper provided by Godbor's. _ There were very many exceptionally beautiful frocks to. bo seen, and gold and silver trimmings retained their popularity. All oyer the hallsequines of every metallic hue glittered and Hashed in the brilliant Hglvi. ..
