At a meeting yesterday 'afternoon it was decided to adjourn the Manawatu River Commission until after July 20 in order to allow tho various local bodies interested to collect evidence. A spccial meeting of the Kairanga County Council was held yesterday to deal with tenders for the Tiritea Bridge and KarereKairanga Road, and to make ,-i special rating district in connection with tho Tcnui protective works loan only. Oho.tender (£876 Bs. 4d.) was received for tho ercction of the Tiritea Bridge. This was considerably higher than tho engineerls estimate, and it was decided that tho engineer bo empowered to have tho bridge erected by day labour. The contract for the Karere-Kairanga Road was let to Mr. Olson at 14s. lid. per chain. Tho question of representation at the River Commission was also discussed, and the councillors . generally expressed themselves as being opposed to the scheme. Tho chairman and Councillors Bryant and Batchelar were appointed to -watch tho interests of tho Council. The forthcoming boxing contest between Tracey and Rollo is being freely discussed in local circles. Rollo is in active training, and indulges in a long walk each morning. Tracey, so far, is spoken of as the favourite. PAIIIATUX. . The hounds were taken to Hamua on Wednesday" afternoon; and, despite tho weather being somewhat showery in the afternoon, the )Voodlands Hunt. Club had a fairly good run., ' In- tho ovoning tho club held its annual ball in Hamua, a popular event, which was well attended, and enjoyed by the members arfd their friends. ■ Some little excitement is taking place locally at tho near approach of the club's race mooting, and, judging by. tho work that l is being put in by the hunters competing, it should prove a groat success, as tho horses this year aro all round perhaps tho best that have taken part in this meeting- , ■ The weather has cleared again, ana yesterday was bright and warm, with quite a spring-like feeling ! in tho air. i OTAKI. At the Police Court yesterday a prohibition order was issued against John Quill. An offonder,. who has only just arrived from a'sea voyage, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. ;Tho ladies': hockey match, played on Wednesday between Otaki and Manakau, resulted in' an easy win for the former by four goals to nil. Tho men woro beaten at .Manakau by five goals to nil. . 1 SHANNON. Many. flaxcutters aro returning to this district,: as cutting starts about the end of the . month. 1 Most of tho flaxmills will start stripping noxt month. Tow is in future to be officially graded. FEATHERSTON. Tho monthly meeting of tho School Committee was held oil Wednesday night, Mr. W. /Benton in | the chair. A credit-balance of £8 10s. Id. was reported, and accounts amounting to £3 Bs.. 6d. were passed for payment. It was decided to join tho School Committees' Association, and to, take part in tho proposed conferenco on school matters. It was resolved to support the candidature of Mr!. A. H. Vilo on tho Wellington Education Board. Tho headmaster's report showed , a roll number of 138, with an average attendance of 119. for tho month. Tho average attendant for the quarter was 118. Several requirements for the school were attended to.
