NEW HEBRIDES. . Melbourne, July 22. Inquiries by the Federal Government indicate that the report that the French Government had appointed a judicial officer in the Now Hebrides under- thq new Franco-British Convention is not well founded. A French judicial officer was relieved of his duties in New Caledonia, and was appointed to act in the New Hebrides, but the appointment was not made under the Convention. •, LOCAL BODY AND CASUAL WAGES. Sydney, July 22. An attempt was made by tho City Council to raise the wages of casual labourers, in dofiance of the advice of the Council's responsible officers. The Lord Mayor, warned the aldermen against the reckless raising of wages, and threatened that, if money was voted in'haphazard fashion, he would refuse to sign cheques. < PROSPECTORS MURDERED. Sydney, July 22. Details of the murder of two Australian prospectors named Fearby and Sutherland, at Trainor, show that it was the work of brigands in . order to secure the victims' money and arms. ' . SUNDAY CONCERTS. Sydney, July 22. After a long-drawn battle, tho City Council decided not to allow the use of the Town Hall for Sunday concerts.
