Obituary: Dr. Potter, Anglican Bishop of New York. ; : ' \.. .. — ' A distinguished' prelate. The Right Rev. Henry Codinan Potter carno of a' higlily-distinguished family of divines, legislators, and men who have in.various capacities done good service-to tho State. He was a younger son of the Eight Rev. Alonzo Potter, who was Bishop of 1 Pennsylvania for twenty years. Dr. H. C. Potter was born at Schenectady, N.Y., in 1835, and after being educated chiefly at the episcopal academy in Philadelphia, graduated at 'the Theological Seminary of Alexandria, Virginia, in 1857, and.'was ordained deacon in the same year, and priest in. 1858. Prom July, 1857, till May, 1859, ho was rector of Grecnsburgh, Pennsylvania; and for the next, seven years he had charge of St. John's, Troy, New York. He then became assistant minister of, Trinity Church, Boston, where he remained two years. From May, 18G8, till January, 188-1, he was rector of Grace Church, New York City. ' In 1883 Bishop Horatio Potter, of New York, ; asked for an assistant on account of his failing health, and the Convention of that year unanimously elected his nephew, Dr. Henry C. Potter, assistant bishop with the right of succession. He was consecrated on October 20, in the presence of forty-threo bishops and . three hundred of the clergy, the General Convention .being then in session in Philadelphia. Soon afterwards •the aged Bishop formally. resigned the whole charge of the diocese to his assistant. In 1888 tho University of Cambridge (England) Conferred on Dr. Potter the degree 1 of LL.D., Harvard University gave him the degreo' of D.D. in 1890, ana Oxford' University tho degree of D.D. in 1892. The Bishop presided over the largest diocese in point of population in. the United States. He worked devotedly for. tho poorest of his flock, and did not hesitate to take up his residence for some time in the worst slums'of Now York. ■
