THE WESTPORT CASE. •; (BT TELEGIUI'II—I'RESS ASSOCIATION.) v Westport, July 21. ■ 'At tho hearing • of tho charges of perjury -gainst William T. Connelly to-day, Haline& was cross-examined. He denied material statements made by the chief witnesses for the; Crown at Westport and Nelson, stating that Cockerry and others misunderstood and misstated the fight he described. H.. Christ&isen, a, lad, gave evidence mainly corroborative of Halinen and Andersen as to tho time they were at tho theatre, witness stating that he sat. in tho' samo seat as these two, and next to Haakonson, who was with them. ' Maria Alexander Pearce said she saw Boiirke and Connelly como out tho Ayers Hotel arm-in-arm, Connelly dragging Bourko, who was drunk, against his will over in the direction of M'Laughlan's shed; that Bourke fell down, and Connelly l struck him sevferal blows with a bottle and afterwards dragged Him into' tho shed,-lit a match, and on tho ajjpearrtiice of a man with a lantern and a dog hurried out at tho back of the shed and over tho fence. Cross-examined, witness Bfli'l she : had no drink that day, was not drunlc at four o'clock and attempting to get '.hrougli a fence ten feet from the gate. Sho had recently been in Court applying for a separatipn order from her husband, alleging that he was addjeted to drink, her Ims- • band at the same timo making a similar chalgo against her, : and tho Magistrate declining to mako an order. She was accusionieiT to taki- something before going to bed at night. Sho bad not given her version of •flairs bccauso sho expected Halinen and Ahdnfsian, who sho knew were innocent men, would got off, and did not wish.to get mixed tip in tho affair, but considered it her duty to corno forward now and give evidence. < Tho Ceun. adjourned till to-morrow.
