FIGURES FOR MINING.
' LAST YEAR'S ENORMOUS, OUTPUT. In the mines and quarries general report for 1907, -just issued, it is stated 1 that the total-number of persons■ employed 'in. and about all the mines in the United Kingdom last,: year was 972,220, of ■ whom 940,613 worked ,at the 3327" mines under the Coal Mines Act, and 31,602 at, the 748'-mines under, tlie Metalliferous Act. Compared with i9OG, there was an increase of 58,273 persons at the mines under the Coal -Mines Act, and of 1371 persons at the mines under tho Metalliferous Mines Act. The number of young 'persons under sixteen employed underground in coal mines.was 47,739; ' In- the, section dealing with the output, the total output of? ! minerals at the mines under the .Coal Mines Act is given as 282,104,141 tons, of which 267,812,852 were coal, 2,890,097 fireclay,- 8,236,118 ironstone, 2,675,779 oil shalp, and 489,295 sundry minerals. ..-Tho average of th'e output of mineral at mines under tho- Coal Mines Act was 372 tons per person. The average 'output of minerals at mines under tho Metalliferous Mines Act was 3,388,040 -tons,. of: .which 1,802,946 tons wore iron ore. -Tho total accidents at mines under the Coal Mines Act numbered 1162, with 1245 deaths. At mines under tho Metalliferous Mines Act there wore 33 accidents, causing 34 deaths, , and at-quarries .88 accidents'occurred, resulting in 89 deaths. The total. number of non-fatal ' accidents reported , during tho year-amounted to 5599 at mines under the Coal Mines Act, 281 at -mines under tho Metalliferous Mines Act, and 1459 at quarries under the Quarries Act. - ' - ■ ■
